The Top 5 Most Terrifying Religu-licious Freakshows

Religion tends to bring out the best and the worst of people.  After watching Bill Maher’s new documentary Religulous this weekend, this fact has never been more obvious.  In the film Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor praises religion for it’s ability to soften the edges of humanity.  But with the good comes the bad, and in some cases the most horrifying insanity imaginable.

With snake-handling preachers and tear-stained children speaking in tongues, the soft edges can become a bit hard to recognize.  But as you will see in these five video clips, evangelical craziness can be  gruesomely exciting to watch and cause you to shrill with terror.

The Top 5 Most Terrifying Religu-licious Freakshows After the Jump

#5. Holy Ghost Terrorizing Christians in a Church

Not sure if the preacher is speaking Spanish in this one, but I think it’s fair to say that speaking in tongues is a universal language.

#4. The Magic of Benny Hinn

It’s been awhile since I have seen or heard anything of the great Benny Hinn.  I imagine he’s been called out for being the fraud that he is and well… that can’t be good for business.  But back in the day, this white-haired, self-proclaimed proclaimed prophet could really stir up some havoc in his congregation.

#3.  The Crazy Brazilian Preacher Girl

The first time I saw this clip, my skin crawled like I was seeing Hitler speak for the first time… if Hitler was a 7 year-old, screaming Brazilian girl.

#2.  Brainwashing - From Jesus Camp

If you haven’t seen Jesus Camp, you must… just be sure to allow yourself a couple of days to spend in the fetal position with a brillo pad, some anti-bacterial soap and a cold shower.

#1. Snake Handlers Church Service

What could possibly be more unsettling than watching a group of West Virginian hillbillies worship the lord in song, snakes in hand, through the eye of a cellphone camera?

typically i would agree that hillbillies with snakes in church is the most effed up thing, but after watching those kids in Jesus Camp, I just need to get clean.

Alright, So I’m going to defend the Snake Handlers for a second. Most of the snake handlers you see are a member of the Southern Baptist, and all of my family and myself included, are Southern Baptist. The only time the church does snake handling is during revivals or other super special occasions, it’s not like we do it every week or anything. And even some of the members of the church think its weird! I know I do! But I just thought I would stand up for them…but those kids at Jesus Camp are crazy!!!

These people were experiencing the holy spirit, they weren’t crazy, or hypnotized. They were consumed in praise of their God. I almost cried when I watched the kids at Jesus Camp. They were so young, yet they seemed to understand God more than alot of adults. Don’t judge something before you understand it.

I honestly believe that they must put something in the water at Jesus Camp…I just don’t want to believe that those kids could be swayed so easily, I guess. Gotta go now…must shower again..maybe with lye this time - if only I could wash my eyes and brain of this disturbing stuff !

  9. Maria says:

No… I believe what has happened at Jesus Camp, and what often happens when a person is “consumed in the praise of their God” is a phenomenon called mass hysteria. Look it up.

The Jesus Camp video is the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen. There’s a difference between being devout and being insane. Religion in our government? Teaching these kids that fictional characters would be smote by God if the story were in the Bible? No. That’s disgusting, molding such impressionable beings into agents of some insane dogma before they have the chance to think for themselves is disgraceful.
My God most definitely doesn’t like them.

Ok, those poor kids. They’re not even old enough to understand what’s being said, let alone the concept of God. When they get to be 12, all they know is God. Those are the kids who try to get evolution taken out of schools, who choose their friends based on whether or not they believe in God. I know, believe me. I’m an athiest, and whenever I tell people i dont believe in god, they tend to like me alot less. Well I’ve got news for you. Evolution, science, all that good stuff, can be backed up with evidence. God is just a story and a makeshift answer for the question “Where did we come from?” So I was open minded about God until i really thought about it. Oh, and by the way, the bible is not proof of god. The bible was written by MAN.

It’s one thing if adults choose to be manipulated by a ’showman’…and these people are very good at what they do…
But, it’s quite another matter when children are subjected to (yes it is) brainwashing techniques…at the pleasure of adults.
Taking these young people who are so impressionable & forcing them to such extremes of emotions & fear…who are these ‘adults’…these people who would put these kids through this kind of emotional upheaval? Not only the very strange people who run this type of ‘indoctrination’, but how on earth could the parents of these kids rationalize the pressure put on their own children????
Surreal to watch…but so very painful to realize that it’s all very real. Sick.

It is a shame that this is often what is taken by the world as representative of Christianity, when in reality it isn’t even o the fringe-none of this has anything to do with the Christ they claim-Christianity is not showmanship, ot tongues or snakes, but about the promise of eternal life in Christ Jesus, freely offered to any who would accept. How tragic.

Yeah, I am not a firm believer in god I am not even sure if he/she or it does exist but it is comforting in the thought that it does. People take this to extremes. Jesus Camp honestly unnerves me, it seems like they are trying to mold a group of terrorists. I mean I do not have a whole lot of faith in our government and ALOT of things could change but instead of brainashing children we need to do something about it protest make petitions write to our congress men and women. You know exercise the freedoms (even though as time passes we lose more and more of them) that many of our brothers and sisters have died for. LEAVE GOD OUT OF GOVERNMENT! This is America, it shouldn’t matter if you are christian or muslim in the government here as long as you bleed red you are the same to me.

The Jesus Camp kids were NOT experiencing God…they were simply disassociating and letting their tongues just move randomly. I believe in God very very much, and I absolutely believe He finds these Jesus Camp people pretty sad indeed. God does NOT care about Harry Potter or warlocks, etc…He has larger things to worry about.

And yeah, Jesus Camp is creepy…I really feel sorry for those poor kids. Their parents have done them a significant disservice. This thing is a cult, pure and simple.

It’s not the kids who are to blame, its the fucking grownuos. Who in their right mind belives that a kid have so much sins in them that whoever or whatever you belive in is not going to accept them. Shit that huge ladyspeaker gives me the creeps. It’s sad, really. And wtf? Harry potter is great. Even God used to do magic of sorts and he and his fellow friends down on earth did use violence, quite a bit if I recall.

This is in reference to video #2 - What she was saying about Harry Potter is right. Christianity is completely again anything to do with witches and warlocks. I believe in speaking in tongues. I don’t know if those people in the video are really speaking in tongues or just faking. What she was saying about hypocritical Christianity is right too. People want to say they’re Christians but think it’s ok to be one way in church and another way outside of church. The word Christianity means Christ-like. If you’re not like Christ than you are not a Christian. The point of breaking cups? Who knows. Never seen that in the bible.

  24. Angie says:
    Sat, 11th Oct 20088:33 pm

Referencing video #5 - Anybody who has ever read the bible can tell that it was not the Holy Ghost terrorizing those people. The Holy Ghost is a gentle spirit and a comforter. He isn’t wild and doesn’t make you act crazy. That’s a lie the devil wants people to believe; the you ‘catch’ the Holy Ghost and end up running around looking stupid. I’m not sure what spirit is over those people but if it makes you act wild and stupid, it’s definitely NOT the Holy Ghost.

  25. Angie says:
    Sat, 11th Oct 20088:36 pm

Video #4 - That is not the Holy Ghost either. The Holy Ghost helps. What is it helping to make people fall on the floor? Obviously not the Holy Ghost. Read the bible people.

  26. Angie says:
    Sat, 11th Oct 20088:37 pm

For video # 5 - Devil worship. Pure and simple.

  27. Mark says:
    Sat, 18th Oct 200810:16 pm

There nothing in the Bible that says that the holy spirit would make people babble like idiots. Speaking in tongues was just speaking in other “Known’ languages for the purpose of spreading the good news. Suddenly some Jews would be able to speak fluent Greek,…or whatever language was necessary in order for people to hear the Good News about Christ. Babbling like morons would have had the opposite affect…just like it does today.
