Smokin’ Hotties Celebrate National Smokeout Day 2009!

In this day and age of calorie concerns, yoga, wheat grass smoothies and an overall obsession with health, many of the vices we know an love seem sadly on their way out. With that in mind, today is the 34th annual American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout so it is safe to assume the first victim of this cultural cleansing is the cigarette. (Unless Barack Obama changes all that.) And if you ask us, that’s a serious tragedy. See, there’s just something about a woman with a cigarette that makes dudes happy. Maybe it’s the ‘bad girl’ image. Maybe it’s thoughts of ‘oral fixation.’ But no matter what the reason, it’s F’ing hot! Not that we have a smoking fetish, but after checking out all these smokin’ hotties, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

The End of Flavored Blunts?

blunt-lead

Yesterday, President Obama signed into law a anti-tobacco bill, which will make the distribution of flavored cigarettes illegal. The law is intended to limit tobacco products being “marketed to children”, but this could also signal the end to something any pot smoker holds dear: flavored blunts.

Now, the wording of the bill seems to specifically target “cigarettes,” not cigars or tobacco wraps. But it doesn’t take much to imagine a judge ruling that flavored cigars and tobacco wraps qualify just as much as cigarettes do. And if that happens, it will be a sad day in Pot Town. (more…)

Top 5 Most Offensive Anti-Smoking Commercials That Should Be Banned From TV

temp-image_1_26

Everybody knows, smoking kills. From Truth’s “hip” viral marketing campaigns to your Aunt Debby’s constant hacking, the fact that tobacco use kills more than 5 million people per year and is the cause of six of the world’s eight leading causes of death shouldn’t surprise anyone. And yet people keep smoking. For that reason, anti-smoking organizations continue pumping out some of the most vile, disgusting images on television. From singing cowboys to crying children, the shock-and-awe tactics of these “public service” ad campaigns can nauseate even the strongest stomachs. (more…)

Smokin’ Presidents

Happy Presidents Day: A visual index of the POTUS’ Smoking Habits.

We here at COED are big fans of tobacco. Yeah, we know it’s bad for you – really, really bad for you. But it’s good for the soul, damnit. Which is why we were so happy to hear that Barack Obama has been smoking like a chimney over the past couple of months, despite trying to kick the habit at the beginning of his Presidential bid.

Despite claims that the White House will be “smoke free,” we’re hoping he’ll back down on that promise and add himself to the long lineage of tobacco-using US Presidents. Remember, at this nation’s inception, tobacco was one of the biggest cash crops (after hemp, which is a whole other post altogether). And from John Adams to Franklin D. Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, tobacco has had a home in the White House. Here is every President known to use tobacco.

The Truth About Anti-Smoking Ads

Remember when The Truth first started? Way back in 1998, it was a little grassroots organization dedicated to putting out the truth about the tobacco industry. I was only 11 back then, but I still thought it was pretty cool that there were people hitting the streets and just talking to people about how harmful cigarettes can be.

But I know you guys have seen the recent Truth commercials. Sure, they’re still sort of living up to their name. Still, it seems like they’re more interesting in getting the shocked “WTF?” reaction out of people instead of educating them.

Most people in my family don’t smoke. I happen to be allergic to cigarette smoke, and I have asthma, so taking a puff for me would kind of be like committing suicide. One of my aunts smoked until the day she died about seven or eight years ago. My other aunt stopped smoking shortly after. I have a bunch of friends who smoke, though. And no matter how much lecturing they get, I know that most of them are not going to stop smoking. Hell, I remember asking a friend of mine at school if he thought he would ever quit smoking. He laughed. Then coughed. (more…)
