On November 4th, 1861 the University of Washington opened in Seattle, Washington only back then it was known as the Territorial University. the largest university in the Northwest and the oldest public university on the West Coast. In 2011, the “Public Ivy” was ranked 16th worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, 23rd worldwide by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and 42nd in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report.
