2011 was a great year for music. Multiple genres – from indie rock to rap to pop to country – all had huge years. We saw the emergence of brand new power players (Adele, LMFAO), consistency from the staples (Kayne West, Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, Foo Fighters), solid debuts from important breakthrough artists, (Foster the People, Frank Ocean) and quality sophomore releases from breaking stars (Bon Iver, Drake). We got introduced to Spotify and the cloud. Music even brought an influx of reality TV shows all geared towards finding the next best thing in music (X-Factor, The Voice, American Idol). On December 16th, the DJ super-group the Swedish House Mafia came to Manhattan to play at MSG. The party raged until approximately 1 in the morning, at which point they took it to the Roseland Ballroom. I was one of the few New Yorkers who missed the show, but luckily the show was streamed live via Fuse TV. Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis is one of the best holiday songs – otherwise it wouldn’t have made it onto our Ultimate Christmas Playlist. So, what could possibly make this legendary track any better? Band names have always been oddballs: the Smashing Pumpkins, the Goo Goo Dolls, Bush. It’s not like we expected this to change — for Korn to suddenly spell their name with a “C” and start promoting the second tier of the food pyramid. I almost think that having a good band name is more important than having a good band (but that’s why I’m not a musician). Time has proven that the weird names prevail, and we’ve got proof. Chiddy Bang’s “Ray Charles” won top honors in our last SOTW poll, beating out Chris Brown’s “All Back”. Beating might not be the best choice of words when “Chris Brown” is in the same sentence. I didn’t watch the American Country Awards last night, but apparently I missed some serious cleavage from Kristin Chenoweth. The award-winning actress / singer gave reigning country music queen Carrie Underwood a run for her money. But, the real discovery here is Danelle Leverett, member of The Jane Dear Girls. When I look at the Who’s Who of people making it famous as rappers, I see dudes like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Childish Gambino. Yawn. Those guys aren’t even rapping, they’re just talking to a beat. When I see this kid, though and I’m actually amazed because he has actual flow. This two-year is on a whole other level than you guys, that’s why you can’t understand him.
