There are some guys that, no matter how many times they headline pay-per-views and no matter how many times they are hyped by the announcers, just aren’t main event material. For some, their time has come and gone while others just fail to live up to the hype that the UFC has bestowed upon them. Here are the five most overrated UFC fighters. (more…)
Randy Couture couldn’t beat Brock Lesnar. Heath Herring couldn’t beat Brock Lesnar. Frank Mir couldn’t beat him a second time. So, who among the MMA heavyweights can bring down the UFC phenom? Here are five fighters I think stand a good chance against Brock Lesnar’s brutal beatings. (more…)
While the UFC is bringing in new talent, like Anthony Johnson and Todd Duffee, all the time, UFC President Dana White has been reaching out and bringing back a lot of the faces that the fans have been following for years. So while some of the newbies might be the emerging stars in the ring, these five heavy-hitters definitely know a thing or two about whooping ass. (more…)
For decades, boxing reigned as king of the sparing sports. Crowds from around the world would cheer for their favorite heavy hitters, like Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Mike Tyson. But despite paving the way for the new generation of fighting sports, boxing has taken a real hit in fans and ratings to the new breed, mixed martial arts. Here’s why… (more…)
Even Major League Baseball has succumbed to the pressure of having instant replay used during the game. And the Ultimate Fighting Championship could very well be next. The Nevada Athletics Commission has approved the use of instant replay in mixed martial arts fights, and many are saying this system will soon be utilized in the UFC, especially since the action came because of two recent fights. Saturday night, “The Face of Women’s MMA” Gina Carano got her face pummeled and clock cleaned in a brutal one round slug fest against Brazilian tough girl Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. In a controversial decision in literally the last second of the first round, the referee called the fight as Carano absorbed a series of hard hits to the face and head. Cyborg’s victory makes her the first ever women’s MMA champion.
If you are not a fan of MMA, then the uber-hottie / super badass Gina Carano is certain to make you a believer. Tonight, the “face of women’s mixed martial arts” bludgeoned the mug of Kelly Kobold to victory in a brutal, three-round brawl… and did I mention how hot she looked doing it? Thank you God for TiVo.
John Fitch is ridiculously tough. Before fighting GSP at the Target Center, he was tied with Royce Gracie for the most consecutive wins in the UFC. Unfortunately, being tough and gritty alone doesn’t make you a champion.
Fitch fought valiantly for five rounds against what is arguably the greatest athlete in all of MMA and one of the most dynamic fighters of all time, Georges St. Pierre. Pierre proved to be faster, stronger, and more technically skilled then the American Kickboxing Academy member and beat him standing and on the ground.
Early in the first round the Champ almost had the challenger finished, checking a kick with a vicious right hand that crumpled Fitch. The following ground and pound attack was furious, but not enough to put away the stalwart Fitch. Save a short rally in the second round, the remainder of the fight was owned by the Canadian, who took his opponent down at will and landed with crisp strikes while standing. After the fight, BJ Penn jumped into the cage in an attempt to hype a match up between the two. Here’s hoping. (more…)
My favorite sport can kick your favorite sport’s ass…literally. MMA has been exploding over the past couple of years—merchandise, reality shows, pay-per-views—and in my opinion it’s the best sport on Earth. Here are some reasons why:
10) Post-fight interviews with Joe Rogan
Interviewing an athlete after a major win or loss can be difficult at the best of times; just look at KG’s interviews after the Celtics won the NBA title this year. But interviewing a fighter after he got his ass kicked is damn near impossible. The UFC insists on doing interviews in the ring immediately following fights. They send Joe Rogan into the cage to ask fighters how they feel and to tell everyone how the fight went down. Replays are shown on the Jumbotron so fighters can give play by plays, but what usually happens is a jumbled mess. A lot of fighters don’t speak English well, or at all, and can barely hear/understand Rogan over the crowd. Other fighters simply watch the replay and make no comments, or say things like, “Yeah I kicked his ass!”, and others are so happy they just talk about being happy, not the fight. Needless to say, it’s hilarious watching Rogan try to make that mess into something viewers are actually interested in. (more…)
