There was a time, perhaps a greater time, in comic book history when the fate of the world rested on the shoulders of a prepackaged fruit pie or sponge cake – naturally, I’m talking about the Hostess snack cake ads that appeared in comics from the mid-70s into the early 80s. Heroes and even the occasional villain would use these tasty treats to quell an alien invasion or provide a distraction for a daring escape from the authorities. While it was a no-brainer that these companies used iconic and marketable characters like Batman and Spider-Man, what about the rest of those that occupy these universes… the crazier, creepier and just plain wrong characters? See our list of comic characters that should never appear in a Hostess ad after the jump!

Get ready to travel to galaxies far, far away to some of the greatest bars many of our favorite characters call their home away from home!

With the upcoming film adaptations of Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America, the floodgates are opening for more movies based on comic books. However, before we go all willy-nilly buying up every comic property left and right, let us not forget that not all comics are as golden as Batman or Spider-Man. With that in mind, here are a few comic books producers should avoid to prevent a box-office disaster.

Comic books have come a long way since their inception. But the following collection will make you wish you never even started reading them. It’s when, for the best or worst of intentions, comic book writers committed themselves to a story so horrible, its effects would be felt for years to come.

Looks like Spider-Man will be hanging out with Mickey Mouse more often than he wants. The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment and all its superheroes. The total cost of the acquisition will be around $4 billion. Disney will now have access to over 5,000 Marvel characters, some of them which include house hold names like Spider-Man, X-Men, and Iron-Man.
