The second week of NBA action is in the books and a few surprises have already left a mark on this young season. The Lakers have jumped out to a ho hum 8-0 start and the shocking Hornets are becoming the talk of the town in New Orleans as they have played brilliant 7-0 ball thus far. After an exciting first week of action in the 2010-11 season that centered around the new look Miami Heat, the addition of Shaq in Beantown, and Amare Stoudemire’s name littered across the Madison Square Garden marquee, we are starting to get back into the flow of a new season of NBA basketball

Over the past two years, the talk around the NBA has centered around where LeBron James will play in 2010. Finally, that time is near. After July 1, LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and many other top superstars can be changing zip codes. Although some players such as Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire and Paul Pierce have Early Termination Options (ETO) and are likely to remain with their respective teams, I’m including them in this list in case they do opt out, which will only add to the biggest free agent class in the history of sports.

The NBA Playoffs, simply put, are awesome. In the next two months you’ll see more action than Mark Sanchez after an an SNL afterparty. That being said, even more action will take place in the Vegas Sportsbooks. For those of you who hope to crack the books, here are a couple of tips going into the trenches.

It’s not a Kobe/Lebron matchup as many fans (and NBA commissioner David Stern) may have pined for, but tonight, the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic square off in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. While the Lakers may be the favorite to win the series, they did come up short against the Magic during the regular season–dropping both meetings. So who will get their first NBA title?…

Don’t look now, but the New York Knicks are winners of eight of their past 11 games, including five straight at home. They have surged up the standings to a 21-25 record, one-half game out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, and are already only two wins behind last season’s disgraceful total. But is their recent success a mirage?
