2011 was a great year for music. Multiple genres – from indie rock to rap to pop to country – all had huge years. We saw the emergence of brand new power players (Adele, LMFAO), consistency from the staples (Kayne West, Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, Foo Fighters), solid debuts from important breakthrough artists, (Foster the People, Frank Ocean) and quality sophomore releases from breaking stars (Bon Iver, Drake). We got introduced to Spotify and the cloud. Music even brought an influx of reality TV shows all geared towards finding the next best thing in music (X-Factor, The Voice, American Idol). There are a slew of influences out there in this wet ‘n’ wild world. Ya got drugs, alcohol, TV, movies, music – just about everything and anything can make an impression on you. We write a lot about those influences and, for me at least, women seem to be the most influential. I’d say 95% of what I do on a daily basis is based on what women want and like. A couple weeks ago, I stumbled across a video produced by a group called, “Bad Lip Reading” that featured Rick Perry spewing absolute nonsense. I was about to post it when I saw this wasn’t the only effort from the BLR crew, they have 10 others, all music videos. The premise is simple – they dub over existing video with their own (hilariously wtf) audio to sync up with the subject’s lips. As the summer season winds to an end, so do the summer shows. Last night (Sunday, 9/11) marked the series finale of Entourage and the season finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards went down last night in LA. There were a ton of stars in attendance with the weirdest being a tie between Lady Gaga (who was all done up as her alter ego “Jo Calderone”) and Nicki Minaj (who looked like a kindergartener’s nightmare). Some of the younger female celebrities dressed like old biddies (Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens) while others murdered stellar dresses (Victoria Justice, Demi Lovato).
