April 5th marks the 18th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain, arguably the biggest loss today’s generation of musicians has faced. Not only was he the leading influence behind Nirvana (the sound of grunge music), he effectively ended the era of 80′s rock and Guns and Roses. Since his death, there have been tons of documentaries, books, and t… Click to read more

In case you hadn’t heard, Nirvana is having their 20th anniversary celebration of Nevermind. On top of getting the original cover baby back into the pool, footage from the band’s 1991 show at the Paramount is on YouTube for a limited amount of time. Considering that there’s no band right now that can even hold a candle to these guys, you’re definitely going to want to relive the greatness in all of its free glory after the jump.

To quote the great Bill Hicks, “We live in a world where John Lennon was murdered, yet Barry Manilow continues to put out f**king albums.” And, even though Kurt Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide surrounded by controversy, the end result holds equally sad but true. Seventeen years after his tragic death, you’d be hard pressed to find another Kurt Cobain. He, like Lennon, Elvis, MJ, and Dylan, is in a class of his own, imitated but never duplicated. Though he felt his music had ceased to inspire, a litany of fans, critics, and respected publications would feel otherwise. As our tribute, we’ve pulled together 57 rarely seen photos and videos of Kurt with his fellow band members. Come as you are and see them after the jump.

We’ve been pretty nostalgic here at COED lately. Earlier today, we showed you candid pics from the 61st and 62nd Academy Awards. In early February, we showed you yearbook photos of a former fat kid turned skinny rock star comedian and a beautiful blonde who went from hoodies to hot hand bras. Now, we turn our attention to the music industry with yearbook photos of 41 famous “rock stars”. While you may notice not everyone in our gallery can be categorized as “rock”, you have to admit they underwent a “rock star” transformation. Can you guess the identities without looking at the captions? See the pics after the jump!

Today would have been Kurt Cobain’s 45th birthday. Almost 18 years after his tragic death, his legacy continues to grow. Rolling Stone ranked him as the 12th greatest guitarist and 45th greatest singer of all time. MTV ranked him 7th in the “22 Greatest Voices in Music”. In 2005, a sign was put up in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington that read “Welcome to Aberdeen — Come As You Are” as a tribute. In 2006, Cobain took the place of Elvis Presley as the top-earning deceased celebrity. As our tribute, we’ve pulled together 31 rarely seen photos and videos of Kurt with his fellow band members.

The Next Three Days came out this past weekend. The film stars Elizabeth Banks as a woman accused of murder. Her husband, played by Russell Crowe, attempts to clear her name. The thriller got us thrilled about all the crazy wives and girlfriends who could potentially murder someone, whether it be their mate, their extramarital date, or Jon and Kate Plus 8. Sure, we all get upset at our significant others once in a while and maybe we even fantasize about doin’ some damage but a lil’ thing called reason comes into our head and we chill the F out. We’re not so sure the same would happen for these wild WAGs.

Nothing gets my engines revved like informational tidbits. It combines two of my favorite things – information and tidbits (duh), to create a brief brain stimulating surge of energy that can only be rivaled by this.
One of my favorite music related informational tidbits is the laundry list of legendary music artists in the “Forever 27 Club.… Click to read more

That’s right. Television isn’t the only medium that can produce spin-offs for their own financial gain. So can writers! You all may remember the recent post about cover songs being more popular than the original. This time we’re covering thirteen cover songs so bad that if given the choice between listening to it or spending an evening with Ann Coulter, you would really be between a rock and a hard place. So if you think Soulja Boi is insufferable (I for one do), then check out these tunes.

Today, on my way to the COED offices in Chelsea, I walked by this street poster announcing the November 3rd re-release of Nirvana’s 1989 debut album, Bleach. We’ve all seen Nirvana’s iconic “Unplugged” performance, read all the stories about the bands quick rise and fall with the death of 27 year-old front man, Kurt Cobain. So to celebrate this awesome re-release we want to give you something a little different.

Live fast and die young. Thus is the credo of rock stars (especially the really dead ones who did just that). Let’s forget Elvis and John Lennon and focus on the rock stars that truly lived the lifestyle. Here are my top picks:

It seems that Converse (#1 choice of 1920s b-ball stars and indie rock hipsters alike) is celebrating 100 years of being in the sneaker business by releasing a line of limited edition kicks that pay homage to rock greats The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, and Kurt Cobain. The designs, which are printed on both the classic Chuck Taylor and Jack Purcell h… Click to read more
