The Costacos Brothers shot and produced “fantasy” sports posters that gave pro athletes a larger-than-life look and appeal. Since they didn’t have a license from any of the leagues, they were unable to produce game action shots. Instead, they made personality posters that turned the players into comic book heroes and Hollywood action stars. To celebrate their new exhibit “For the Kids” at Salon 94 Freemans, we’ve gathered some of their best work along with other kitschy sports posters from the ’80s & ’90s and beyond. LeBron James was recently in the news promoting his campaign to retire the #23 in the NBA in honor of the great Michael Jordan. “His Airness,” LeBron and my favorite Movember supporter Don Mattingly aren’t the only great players who have shared the same number.
