Reportedly, Houston was founded on this day, August 30th, in 1836 by two real estate entrepreneurs from New York, Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen. The brothers decided to name the city after Sam Houston, the popular general at the Battle of San Jacinto, who was later elected President of Texas. Today, Houston’s the largest city in the state and is part of the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Anytime you have a lot of people in a warm climate, you’re bound to have a bunch of smoke doctors wearing next to nothing.
