Fun fact: I was (am) an SAE brother at JHU. I pledged spring of Sophomore year and lived in the house my last two years. I’m no stranger to the type of f***ing pandemonium that can go down on a weeknight much less homecoming weekend. Let’s just say we’re on a first name basis with the ER staff and Baltimore PD. But, I don’t think it ever got to the level of armageddon experienced at Vandy’s SAE house. A fellow SAE passed along this email from the EA (read: “Eminent Archon” aka President) and Alumni Relations Chair to alumni about the damages caused to the house over homecoming weekend. After a while, the average college party will become pretty predictable – they’ll start with music, pong, and slow drinking. After an hour or so, the girls will show up from pregaming at their friend’s house and the pong tables will either get moved or relocated to make space for bumping and grinding. Don’t get me wrong, I love college parties (plus I happen to be a creature of habit) I’m only saying that no matter where you go there can only be so many new ways to do a keg stand or bong a beer. The same goes for the people at the party: there are always ten people guaranteed to be a big college party no matter where you go. What makes a school frat? Just because your school has a greek system does not make it frat. National greek house needs to make money, so if a student can gather enough support to get the national office’s attention then that person can be granted a charter for a house. Is a school that has a good athletic program automatically make it frat? A solid athletic program allows the university to have a frattier experience but by no means is that school frat. Example: University of Southern California is not frat. After completing four years of college, I have learned a few things. Some of these wonderful tidbits of knowledge will come in handy for my day job, others will be strictly for evening affairs.
