2011 was a mixed bag for movies, but most film fanatics would say it was yet another down year filled with misses rather than hits. Taking a look at our list of Most Anticipated Movies, there were only a handful that met or exceeded expectations. We can’t completely write off ’11 yet, as many of the best films release in December. But after seeing this supercut from YouTube user ‘hatinhand’, you’d think 2011 was unbelievably awesome. It took the user over a month of uploading and editing 166 films and 6 songs. There were plenty of omissions, but most of ‘em sucked, so no one’s getting teary-eyed over it. Last year’s list of most anticipated movies of 2011 had a healthy combination of hits and misses – The Hangover 2, Cowboys & Aliens, Green Lantern, and The Rum Diary proved the expression “don’t believe the hype” while other movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes far surpassed expectations much to the chagrin (yeah, I said it) of cranky commenters. So, which movies releasing in 2012 are dudes most looking forward to? Well, don’t expect much different from Hollywood – they’re sticking to their arsenal of sequels, prequels, superheroes, reboots, and re-envisionings of classic fairy tales. Sometimes, even Hollywood has to check itself for being too racy or steamy. The MPAA replaced the X-rating with NC-17 (No Children Under 17 Admitted) in 1990 for this reason. With a Rated R movie, you can get into the theaters with your parents or the homeless guy you paid $10 – not so with an NC-17 movie. If you were too young to see these films when they were released in theaters, I’ve got some homework for you. There are more than 1,000 films that can be classified within the genre of “college” or “university,” and we’ve narrowed down the list to the 20 greatest. So, what constitutes a “college” or “university” movie? Well, the main character(s) must be in college or on a college campus for the majority of the film – so no post-high school, pre-college kids like those in American Pie, Superbad, Say Anything, American Graffiti and the like. Though we do have a film that has guys OUT of college, they’re trying to start a fraternity, which is SO college. No film schools, no law schools, no medical schools. When a good movie ends up being a big box-office success, studios automatically think ‘sequel’ no matter what happened in the previous installment. It makes sense when called for (loose ends, other plausible storylines, etc.) but producers have a way of running something into the ground until it’s no longer profitable. Today, we view anything beyond a trilogy as overkill but before the 70s, it was commonplace to pump out a sequel EVERY year. Some series have 21 or more installments. Driving hours across long stretches of farmland in the middle of nowhere doesn’t make for the most appealing of journeys. Thank goodness there are movies that take something as excruciatingly boring and turn it into something entertaining albeit utterly implausible. So if you find yourself dreading the lengthy voyage from point A to point B, just think about these road trip classics. When it comes to censorship in media, you can’t get more strict than China. Everything from literature to television is under constant watch to make sure cultural revolutions and individual criticisms are averted. You can’t listen to Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy in China for obvious reasons. Television news broadcasts that may paint an ugly picture of China have been blacked out. They have even completely censored YouTube, Facebook and Flickr from their internet. These crazy bans have even spread into their cinemas which have become much more strict about certain movies allowed to screen in their country. Remember Nick Pitera, the guy everyone all over the internet is calling “The One Man Disney Movie”? If you don’t, Nick’s got the insane ability to sing songs from various Disney animated films whether they are sung by the hero, heroine or villain quite well – some are better than others to tell the truth. A few days ago, a fan of Nick’s work put together this video mashup of his voice edited along with the musical numbers from Disney movies and the end result is nothing short of fantastic. Nick’s certainly got a bright future and Disney would be crazy not to hire him as a voice actor… but they might just send a bunch of their legal goons in Mickey ears to show up at his door, strong-arming him to cease and desist. It’s officially March 24th and in case Google’s themed banner on their homepage didn’t tip you off, today marks the 137th birthday of America’s most legendary and influential magicians of the early 20th century – Harry Houdini. But for all his contributions to stage magic and his immortal legacy, not many people know much about him beyond the fact that he was a master escape artist. Houdini was born Eric Weisz on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary to Jewish parents and was one of seven siblings.
