Alcohol Linked to 1 in 25 Deaths, Is Still Awesome

beer-lead

A new report has linked alcohol consumption to one in 25 of all deaths worldwide. The study, conducted by a team from the University of Toronto, found that the average amount of alcohol consumed worldwide is 12 drinks-per-week. In the United States, that number jumps up to 17-per-week, whereas in the Middle East (where alcohol is widely banned) that number drops to 1.3. But Europe takes the award for biggest lushes, with a whopping 21.5 drinks-per-week. (more…)

Spirit Showdown: Scotch vs Bourbon

whiskyFor many drink enthusiasts, Scotch and Bourbon stand strongest at opposite ends of the “brown spirit” battlefield. To the West, the sweet punch to the face of Bourbon, America’s whiskey; to the East, Scotch whisky — a deep, smoky Highland warrior.

While plenty of whisky — or “whiskey,” take your pick — drinkers cross sides, most have their favorite kind. Far more, however, couldn’t tell the difference between a Maker’s Mark and a Johnnie Walker, or don’t realize there’s a difference in the first place.

If you’re only experience with drinking whisk(e)y involves a chaser, you’re doing it wrong. Not that shots suck (never would I say such a thing), but they do limit the drinking experience to “not drunk” and “drunk,” without leaving room for a bit of beverage enjoyment – you know, tasting the whisky, not just washing it down.

Between that and not knowing where to start among the thousands of different whiskeys, it doesn’t seem worth the effort when alcohol still works, regardless of what you know.

But with a little bit of knowledge, a whole new world of drinking is opened up to you. Plus, people will think you’re smart. Here’s how to spot the differences and appreciate Scotch and Bourbon alike. (more…)

Top 5 Gnarliest College Drinks Known To Man

gl_shot_glass_color_lgThe world is full of rough drinks. As most of us can attest to, we’ve all been at “that point” – the point where you only have cheap alcohol and hardly anything to mix it with. These are the drinks that put hair on your chest and gravel in your voice.  You got to be like the MacGuyver of alcohol there for a little while. Or maybe you still are.

And they’re also the most thoroughly fun to make, too. There’s nothing – absolutely nothing – more aggravating than a bartender (or “mixologist”) that takes themselves too seriously. While I love a well made Jack & Coke, I also enjoy the weird drinks that only three guys know to make. Guys with scars and beards and stories – not some white collar jackass who took a class on bar-tending at the YMCA.

Screw Studying: Freshmen Gone Wild

fpx247208Attention USA Today, thank you for telling us something that we already know.

A recent study has announced that, “nearly half of college freshmen who drink alcohol spend more time drinking each week than they do studying. Students who said they had at least one drink in the past 14 days spent an average 10.2 hours a week drinking.”

When high school students make the transition to college they have a go big or go home attitude when it comes to drinking and doing other “college” activities.

This could be why we see so many pictures popping up on Facebook of guys drunkenly shaming each other and girls behaving badly.

Cocktail Psychology: What a Girl’s Drink Says About Her

manhattan

Like clothes, jobs, favorite movies and whether or not you voted for George W. Bush, the type of cocktail a person drinks says a lot more about a person than you might think. Fortunately, the lovely Dr. Jackie Black has laid out the lowdown on what a girl’s drink of choice says about her. Read and learn… and then drink.

Click on a cocktail to see what secrets her favorite beverage reveals about your girl’s inner self.

Juice-Up Your Arnold Palmer

Golf legend Arnold Palmer’s drink of choice is a half iced tea/half lemonade concoction that bares his name. There’s nothing better than an ice cold Arnie to chill you out on a hot afternoon. One thing I never thought about doing was adding alcohol to the drink – it would make the perfect triple threat.

COED Vault: The Brent Musburger Drinking Game

Brent Musburger Drinking Game

College football just wouldn’t be same without Brent Musburger.  And thanks to the Brent Musburger Drinking Game, getting sloshed won’t be either.  It’s pretty easy to play.  Just turn on the game, wait for Brent to over-use one of his many tiresome catch phrases and throw back a cold one.  It’s just that simple, Pardner.

(Note: Partner is spelled “Pardner,” because that’s the way he says it.)

Get Down With American Beer Tourism

beer tour

Nothing will lighten up your weekend this summer like some free beer tourism!

img_2654.JPGAlong with some of the freshest complementary beer one can taste, you will tour the grounds and learn the beer making process from the brew master.

Wine tours have been the traditional powerhouse in alcoholic tourism, but it is now the “craft beer makers, who brew traditionally and produce less than 2 million barrels a year, are attracting a growing audience.”img_2657.JPG

“There are 1,450 and 3,000 breweries in the U.S. and Europe, respectively, and most of them are craft brewers or brewpubs happy to open their doors to the public to share their love of beer.”

Forbes has compiled a slide show of America’s Top Breweries that includes some of my personal favorites – Dogfish Head, Arrogant Bastard, Rogue Ale and Brooklyn Brewery.

If you are interested in taking a tour check out their websites for tour times and contact information.

5 Rad Things To Do With Your Dad

father sonIt’s easy to forget that dads weren’t always dads, which is why we honor them (for giving up their dreams for you). But instead of just doing whatever your mom or sister planned this year, give him some quality guy-time–because that’s all he really wants. And remember, just because Father’s Day is only today, that doesn’t mean you these rad guy activities wouldn’t still kick ass.

1. Build Something: Whether your father is a carpenter or a computer engineer, he’s still a guy and, therefore; likes to build crap. If he already has some projects he’s working on, ask him about them and see if you can help. You can always check out BuildingGadgets.com, which has a ton of cool do-it-yourself electronics. Or you could just build him a blog, but it’s not really the same thing.
