The 1st Friday of June is National Doughnut (or “Donut”) Day, which spawned from a Salvation Army fundraiser in 1938 that honored women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Why donuts? Some recon mission determined bake shops make excellent stations for soldiers. Uh, okay. On this day, doughnut shops like Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme offer free donuts while Utah, Ohio, Texas, and Michigan hold a bike race each year called the Tour de Donut in which competitors can cut their time by eating doughnuts.
