No Sympathy For Detroit’s Collapse

hummer-h2

I have an economics professor that is such a hippie-liberal-douche, it pains me to hear him speak. Every now and then, though, he says something completely uncharacteristic that I agree with. Being that it is my 8am class on Tu/Th, it leaves me with the rest of the day to ponder.

We give the Detroit Big 3 a ton of crap for being slow in transitioning to fuel efficient and alternative fuel automobiles. They still make trucks and SUVs like they did in the prime of the 90’s waste, F-THAT! Good luck with your losses…right? After some poking around after class, I ran across a fun stat – the same Big 3 spends $25B a quarter or over $8B a MONTH in pension benefits.

Ford Listens To His Son – Matt Millen Must Go!

The fans have had enough and now apparently so has the owner’s son and vice chairman of the Detroit Lions.  It is time for General Manager Matt Millen to go.  Where to?  Anywhere but the Lions’ front office.

According to a report in the Detroit Free Press earlier this week, William Ford Jr. spoke out and said he would have fired General Manager Matt Millen if he had the authority to do so.  The Lions have been an atrocity ever since 2001 – the same season Matt Millen was hired as the team’s CEO and GM.  The team he inherited went 9-7 in the 2000 season, but has lost nine or more games in every single season since his infamous hiring.

The team has been the laughingstock of the NFL over the past decade.  Millen’s Lions sport a league-worst 31-84 since his hiring, haven’t made an appearance on Monday Night Football since 2001, all while Millen has made countless hilariously awful Draft-day decisions – most notably using four consecutive top-10 selections on college wideouts, including the super-bust picks of WRs Charles Rogers and Mike Williams. 2010 Chevy Volt to ‘Save Detroit,’ Looks F’ing Stupid

General Motors revealed today, on its 100th anniversary, the 2010 Chevy Volt–the car that’s expected to ’save Detroit,’ where the American automakers have seen steep decline in sales with the rise in gasoline prices and more affordable, fuel efficient cars coming out of Japanese companies. Cool, you might think. Saving US automakers is a good thing. And we’re not trying to take a dump on your dreams, Detroit. But just one question: Why the hell does it have to look so F’ing stupid? Could Wagner’s Injury Mean Mets Will Splurge On K-Rod This Winter?

In light of the news that New York Mets closer Billy Wagner will undergo surgery that will cost him at least one full year, the Mets find themselves without a closer at the back end of one of the most vulnerable bullpens in the league.  Surely, they must shore up this position in the off-season if they wish to improve upon their recent success and enhance their future odds of winning a championship.

Francisco Rodriguez has become one of the most dominant closers in today’s MLB.  He is one save shy of Bobby Thigpen’s all time single season saves record of 57 and still has three weeks to play.  The Angels know how valuable he is, the fans know, and more importantly, Rodriguez himself knows it.  This has often been a topic of debate, as the 27-year old K-Rod has made it known that he will be seeking a salary of roughly $15M per season, probably for 5 seasons, following this year.  And with the barren market for a top flight closer, he will surely get it. Al Gore (Finally) Endorses Barack Obama

Al Gore

In an email sent out this afternoon, former Vice President, Oscar-winner and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Al Gore endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States. His endorsement comes long after most would consider relevant, since the choice is now down to only Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain, a Republican.

The email comes a few hours before the former VP and the Democratic Presidential hopeful take the stage together at 8:30pm [EST] in Detroit, Michigan. The rally will be broadcast live via streaming video, available at BarackObama.com.

This is definitnely a key endorsement (imagine if it went to McCain…), but it’s not like most didn’t see it coming. [BarackObama.com]

Detroit Tops “Most Dangerous City” List

Detroit Michigan Dangerous

Congratulations to Detroit, Michigan: you have won the not-so-prestigious title of “Most Dangerous City,” edging out runner-up St. Louis, Missouri by a few rapes, murders, shootings, robberies…

Actually, there’s no way to determine why a particular city gets chosen as the most dangerous, as specifics are not given – unless you purchase the report.

CQ Press, the publisher of the list, sets the nation aflame every year with bold statements on big cities, collecting cash from anybody willing to pony up dollars for the dangerous details. They also publish a list of “Safest Cities,” but their main attraction is the mayor-baiting list of danger zones.

The report is based on studies taken in cities with over 75,000 residents. Each statistic – rape, homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, etc. – is weighed individually, with more emphasis on the harder crimes. (more…)
