With UMass making the leap to the FBS (along with South Alabama, Texas State, and University of Texas San Antonio) in 2012 and 2013, we got to thinking about some other highly successful and/or prolific squads that should strap on a pair and play with the big boys. With more than 100 teams at the D1 level, you might think enough is enough. Well, we’ve also listed a bunch of programs that should probably take a step down as well. Check out our list after the jump!

Last week, we brought you the 30 expensive things you could buy with the estimated $12B that could be lost during the NFL lockout. With football no longer on their schedule, players must seek alternative means to pass the time and, in many cases, make a buck. Before we were internet moguls… we were career consultants! That’s why we’d like to offer our services to the hundreds of pro football players who have grown tired twiddling their thumbs. As Tim Tebow or Kurt Warner can attest, idle hands are the devil’s tools. See our top suggestions for things NFL players can do during the lockout after the jump!

The 2011 NFL scouting combine takes place this weekend, which means lightning quick 40 yard dashes, Herculean reps on the bench, broad jumps, vert jumps, and CONES! If you’re watching on the NFL Network, you might notice a bunch of the potential draftees are wearing futuristic looking shirt that make them look like Iron Man. Turns out the shirt is making its debut and already has an official endorser – standout Alabama wide receiver, Julio Jones. What does the shirt do, besides teleportation? Find out after the jump!

Ohio State? USC? Florida? The answer might surprise you. After Auburn finished the season undefeated (for the second time since 2000) and won the BCS National Championship, many asked where this team stands amongst the best of the past 10 years. Auburn’s conference, the SEC, has been consistently hailed as the best in D-1, yet they don’t have any schools among the top five with the best winning percentages since 2000. Of the top 25 programs of the last 11 years, five are from the ACC, four are from the Big 10, four are from the Big 12 and four are from the SEC, according to ESPN.com. So who ARE the top college football programs from 2000-2010? Check out the chart after the jump!

The University of Michigan fired their head football coach Rich Rodriguez today just three days after their blowout loss in the Gator Bowl. ESPN was reporting that he was having a meeting with the Wolverines AD at 1:15pm and a College Candy editor with ties to the University of Michigan says Rodriguez got the ax (update: story confirmed by My Fox Detroit). A statement has yet to be made but this now leaves a vacancy at one of the most illustrious football programs in the nation.

If you’re like me you probably sit back at least once during the bowl season and think where in the hell do these guys come up with some of the names for these games? Some are ridiculous, others silly, while many are just plain stupid. While the sponsors pay big money to have the bowl named after (or presented by) them in an effort to increase awareness and recall for their product or service, more times than not it leaves a very bad taste in the consumers’ mouth (we’re looking at you Papa John’s!). That being said, there’ve been some crazy names through the years that deserve recognition for their excellence or lack thereof:

You know that mode in Madden where you can pick a classic team for the past and pit them head to head with another classic team? ’72 Dolphins vs. ’07 Patriots, ’85 Bears vs. ’92 Cowboys, ’67 Packers vs. ’78 Steelers? Well, with bowl season kicking into high gear, we thought we’d overlook such travesties as the Meineke Car Care Bowl, and focus on bowl games we’d love to see played between two historically epic football teams.

If you excel in high school football, there’s no guarantee you’ll be any good in college. You’d be surprised how many walk ons outperform recruits. The same holds true for stellar college players making the transition to the NFL. Take a look at the past 20 years of Heisman winners. Then again, a handful of current NFL players didn’t… Click to read more

This weekend there’s only one FBS game on the schedule and it kicks off at 2:30 pm EST at Lincoln Financial Field. I’m talking about the 111th edition of the Army/ Navy game, one of the oldest rivalries in the nation. Navy has been on a winning streak of late with eight wins in a row to take a 54-49-7 series lead.

One of the top MILFs of all-time, Denise Richards, is heating up Blue Mountain State and last night’s episode was proof she’s still got it. On Friday Night Lights, the team made the LONG trip to Kingdom for some royal pains. Funny college football vs. hard nosed high school football. Which do YOU prefer?

The NHL had the bright idea of playing the “Winter Classic” outside at venues not typically used for hockey. The concept has since been adopted by the NCAA with ridiculous results. After this past weekend’s pretty awesome Illinois-Northwestern game at Wrigley and Notre Dame-Army game at Yankee Stadium, we at COED got to thinking: what other non-football venues would make for cool college football matchups?
