Well, it’s about g*ddamn time.
Like many Americans, we here at COED have been constantly harassed for the past year, countless times a day, by robocalls announcing that ‘the warranty on your vehicle is about to expire’. They called our office lines and our cellphones. Time and again, we pressed ‘1′ to speak to a “warranty specialist”, connecting us to some a**hole in a call center somewhere, who we asked to remove our names from the list. We also asked for the name of the company making the calls, where they were located, why the f**k they had the right to call us, endlessly. We were never removed from the list – and they never had any answers. But now, they’re totally screwed.
Friday, ArsTechnica.com reported that the Federal Trade Commission has finally gone berserk on these illegal companies, putting an end to their punkass ways. (more…)

Following in the wake of the Yankees’ signing of star first baseman Mark Teixeira is the deluge of tears flowing from the eyes of other team officials around the league. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio complained that he spent $220M for his entire organization, while the Yankees just spent $423.5M on three free agents this month.
But am I missing something here? Yes, they committed themselves to pay out $423.5M in future salaries, but that is over an eight-year span. Next year’s payroll only assumes $62M of that money ($23M + $22.5M + $16.5M), which is still $26.5M less than the $88.5M that came off the books this offseason. So why was nobody whining when last year’s Yanks were watching the playoffs on TV with a much higher payroll?
Last I checked, the entire league didn’t resemble a nursery room full of whining babies when the Chicago Cubs signed their name on the dotted lines of nearly $300M in future salaries in the winter of 2006 after finishing with a disgusting 66-96 record. So why all the fuss now over another off-season spending spree?
Because of the state of the current economy? No.
Then why? Oh yea, because we are talking about the New York Yankees – the 26-time champion New York Yankees who have kept franchises like the Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays afloat since the dawn of the luxury tax. Teams like the envious Brewers and Marlins need to stop talking about a salary cap and start putting the revenue and profit margin they generate back on the field instead of in their pockets for the fans to enjoy – the same way the Yankees have been doing it for decades.

Last summer, Ben Gordon was offered a 5-year, $50M contract extension from the Chicago Bulls but whined that as the team’s leading scorer, that wasn’t enough. Now its only a few weeks from camp and Gordon’s contract status is still in limbo. He still thinks he deserves something similar to the $71M deal the Bulls recently gave to Luol Deng, but the Bulls disagree.
As a restricted free agent, his options are limited. He can sign an offer sheet with another team – which the Bulls can match – but no one with ample cap space remaining (read: Memphis Grizzlies) is willing to pony up for his services. Or he can force a sign-and-trade, but again, no one wants to pay him a penny more than the Bulls already offered and he rejected. It appears his contract demands are too absurd for any NBA team to consider for the streaky combo guard from UConn. (more…)

Pete Wentz’s band, Fall Out Boy, for which he is the principal lyricist and bass player, has sold upwards of 5 million albums worldwide. Decadence Records, Wentz’s label, has signed bands like Gym Class Heroes, Panic at the Disco and The Academy Is…, who’ve all turned into massive successes. Clandestine Industries, Wentz’s clothing line and book publishing company, recently opened the flagship location in Wentz’s hometown of Chicago. He’s been busy in his personal life too, marrying his muse, Ashlee Simpson last month. And the two are expecting their first child later this year.
You’d think as a successful musician, entrepreneur and family man, Wentz would want to settle down a little, and soak it all in. Wrong! He’s just gearing-up for his biggest project yet: redefining the way we experience music videos on TV and the Web, as host of MTV’s new show, “FN MTV.”
So we got Wentz on the phone to talk to him about life, music and the next big thing in music video history!

Most of you are probably too young to remember who this guy is (hell, I’m too young to remember), or why you should care. But Bo Diddley’s signature beat helped father an entire genre of music, and can be found in the influences of everyone, from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton.
Born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Diddley began his musical career playing the guitar on the windy Chicago streets, before being discovered by Chess Records. But after his break, Diddley kept his music based in a simple premise. When asked about good songwriting, Diddley said you should always write “[a] story with some funny lyrics, or some serious lyrics, or some love-type lyrics. But you gotta think in terms of what people’s lives is based on.”
