The Costacos Brothers shot and produced “fantasy” sports posters that gave pro athletes a larger-than-life look and appeal. Since they didn’t have a license from any of the leagues, they were unable to produce game action shots. Instead, they made personality posters that turned the players into comic book heroes and Hollywood action stars. To celebrate their new exhibit “For the Kids” at Salon 94 Freemans, we’ve gathered some of their best work along with other kitschy sports posters from the ’80s & ’90s and beyond. Check ‘em out after the jump.

After July 1, LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and many other top superstars can be changing zip codes. Although some players such as Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire and Paul Pierce have Early Termination Options (ETO) and are likely to remain with their respective teams, I’m including them in this list in case they do opt out, which will only add to the biggest free agent class in the history of sports.

2008 was a year of great accomplishment for many professional athletes. For others it was a year of total FAIL! Sure, many failed on the field, but it was their idiotic actions in the off time that we will remember for years and years to come. From steroids and pot to the unfortunate DUI, let us remember: The Year in Sports: Substance Abuse Edition.
