On November 21st, 1789 North Carolina ratified the United States Constitution and was admitted as the 12th U.S. state. The home to the Panthers, Bobcats, and Hurricanes really needs a pro baseball team. They’ve gotta be sick of rooting for the Braves by now – they’re one of the losingest teams in MLB history. The Nats aren’t much better and the Orioles have more of their opponents’ fans in the stands than their own. While they don’t see many baseballs in flight (on the pro level) within state boundaries, they do have bragging rights to being first in flight, which is the state’s motto. Kiplinger’s just released its ranking of the best value schools broken down into two major categories: public and private. Their rankings are based on a combination of academics (SAT or ACT scores, admission and retention rates, graduation rates) and affordability (total expenses for in-state vs. out-of-state students, average debt per student at graduation). While that’s all well and good for penny pinchers, what about us booty chasers? We decided to take a look at which of the top “best value” public and private colleges hooks up the most.

What’s a “Public Ivy?” It’s a school that provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price.
