Top Hip-Hop Songs Honoring Moms

Kanye West, Donda West

Donda West, mother of outspoken hip-hop auteur Kanye West, passed away over the weekend from complications during cosmetic surgery. With big-name MCs like Jay-Z offering up condolences we figured today would be a good day to honor the greatest dedications to mothers in hip-hop.

Kanye West – “Hey Mama” (Late Registration)

In lieu of recent events Kanye’s “Hey Mama” has taken on a more important role: what was once a jubilant track dedicated to his mom raising him is now a heartfelt, last-goodbye on record. Over world-music inspired beatwork and gospel claps ‘Ye sounds far different than the heartless, egocentric MCs most associate him with. Humility goes a long way, and I’m sure he will revisit this subject with even more honesty in the near future. (more…)

Led Zeppelin’s Catalog on iTunes – Is It Worth Purchasing?

Led Zeppelin

Old fogies and teenage victims of classic rock epiphanies have reason to celebrate, as Led Zeppelin’s catalog will be on iTunes November 13 in the form of one, downloadable catalog. Priced at $99, Led Zep’s package includes every album the band released, 165 songs in total.

Led Zeppelin is, by all accounts, an essential band. You already know that and therefore have owned their entire discography – or at least their Greatest Hits album – since childhood. So why buy what you already own? Haven’t even the most casual listeners of rock memorized every lyric, every riff?

If you don’t own any album by Led Zeppelin by all means go purchase Led Zeppelin I and IV immediately, then round out your collection with II and III. Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti are somewhat patchy by comparison but still worth picking up.

There’s far too much music to be heard for fans of classic rock – especially fans of Led Zeppelin. While music tastes are completely objective, I’ve offered up my four recommendations if you’re a fan of heavy rock with a blues influence…all available for download on iTunes. (more…)

Kanye vs. 50: And the Winner Is…the RIAA?

Kanye West and 50 Cent

Kanye West and 50 Cent’s ego-tastic battle of the record sales kicked off yesterday, with industry insiders placing Mr. West ahead of 50 in the early runnings. Still, it’s too early to confirm any numbers until Soundscan chimes in.

Further hyping the hype (if that’s even possible) is Kanye canceling his face-off with 50 live on MTV due to his dissatisfaction with the network after the VMAs didn’t go as he planned (no main stage performance, no awards won).

But forget all that: Fiddy isn’t going to quit the music business, and Kanye isn’t going to boycott MTV for very long. All this media hoopla boils down to selling records, plain and simple. (more…)
