E3 is upon us! Alright, so it’s actually occurring all around us, at this very moment, and while it might be disappointing when we remember the E3 of old, with tons of swag and booth babes to ogle, the lack of those things gives us more time to focus on what’s really important. The GAMES. Nothing all that groundbreaking has been announced, and I’m not really expecting anything too huge, like a new platform, but I’ve been following the trailer stream and I’ve got to admit, I’m getting pretty pumped for some of these games.
Let us take a look at the Top 3 Trailers of the show so far.
I’m not a fan of games based on movies. This is because movies based on games are usually fucking terrible (fingers crossed for Lego Batman). I’m not sure if anyone played the latest Hellboy game, but it was bad. Real bad. Of course, for the most beloved, ghost busting, marshmallow roasting movie franchise of all time, exceptions can be made. But looking at this trailer? I don’t think I’ll have to force myself to play it while wincing, because the game actually looks good. It’s a classical 3rd person shooter, with new tech to power the ghost busting action. What’s most exciting is the story is written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and all the Ghostbusters will be voiced by the original actors. Bill Murray in a video game. SOLD.
When fan boys of the original two games (Fallout 1 & 2) heard that Bethesda was planning on changing the formula for one of the most popular and beloved PC series of all time, a few of them got pretty pissed off. Claims that the game would be dumbed down for a console audience ran rampant. But after looking at the trailer, I’ve got to say, not only have they captured the style of the old games (humor mixed with disturbing gore), the game play looks solid, complex and intuitive. The 4 minute game play exclusive they released reveals that depending on your style, you can go turn-based strategic, or FPS in your face. Bonus points for choices. Also bonus points for a catapult that launches nuclear bombs.
Sleeper hit of the entire show and probably the year, calling it right now. This game, based on free-running, momentum and being a really hot Asian chick, looks to be the most inventive and fresh idea in the show. We’ve done wall stunts and free running in the Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed games. But we’ve never seen it done from a first person perspective, especially when the designs make such a big deal about how the perspective is ‘TRUE FPS,’ meaning you can see your hands and feet while playing, to capture a more realistic first person experience. The look of the game, it’s style (based seemingly on disarming people, rather then disemboweling them), and the fact that it’s focus is Parkour’ (instead of it just being a feature) has me really excited to see some more footage. Style points!
