With Monday’s Home Run Derby and Tuesday’s All Star game kicking off the week, the baseball season is ramping up for its end of the summer push. And if there’s one thing we love most about every sport, it’s cheerleaders. And believe it or not, baseball actually has cheerleaders! Don’t believe us? It should be of no surprise to you that we at COED pulled for the Gators in BCS Championship game. Sure Sam Bradford seems like a stand-up guy, and the Sooners have a smokin’ hot cheerleadering squad, but ever since our mind blowing road trip to Gainsville for the LSU vs UF game in October our loyalty has been with the Gators.

Nearly 8,000 people voted and Whitney McMillan of Old Dominion University has been named the 2008 Cheerleader Showdown Champion. Oregon’s Kelsi Metzler, who received 32% of the vote, jumped out to a quick lead but it was McMillan who secured the victory in the end with 42% of the fan vote. Congratulations to Whitney and ODU Monarch nation on the big victory!

Over the past eight months we’ve been featuring college cheerleaders from the SI On Campus Cheerleader of the Week Index in what has become known as our Cheerleader Showdown.

To date eight cheerleaders have been named “Showdown” winners and today it is up to you to decide who is the overall winner in 2008.

2008 Cheerleader Showdown Winners: Cheerleader Showdown I – Whitney McMillan (Old Dominion), 78-percent of the votes. Cheerleader Showdown II – Holly Simmons (University of Tennessee), 54-percent of the votes. Cheerleader Showdown III – Lauren Thompson (Arizona State), 60-percent of the votes. Cheerleader Showdown IV – Kelsi Metzler (Oregon), 60% of the vote. Cheerleader Showdown V – Shiloh (Arizona), 61% of the votes. Cheerleader Showdown VI – Lisa (UCLA), 68% of the votes. Cheerleader Showdown VII – Cassie Acock (ECU), 51% of the vote. Cheerleader Showdown VIII – Stephanie Ferrera – (Miami), 40% of the vote.

First comes Christmas, then New Year’s Eve – then college F’ing football! Now we think, like any good sports fan, that the BCS championship system is a load of crap.
