5 Types of Fantasy Baseball Owners

The first Spring Training game is still a few days away, but for most fantasy baseball owners the season has already begun.  They’re setting draft dates, submitting keepers, and suggesting rule changes that clog up inboxes. While there are hundreds of thousands of fantasy owners out there, most can fit into a few basic categories. Here are 5 types of fantasy owners that can be found in every league:

The 5 Most Annoying Sing-Along Songs in Sports

Once the Jeremy Lin story took off, it was only a matter of time before the suits commercialized it, ruining the spontaneity of the whole thing.  Nothing drains the coolness out of a moment faster than attaching a song to it that everyone can sing along to.  For Jeremy Lin, this came in the form of “Everyday I’m Shuffle-Lin,” complete with cheesy t-shirts and all.  It took all of two days for me to get sick of this, which got me thinking: what are the most annoying song traditions in sports?  Unfortunately, I didn’t have to leave the northeast to find my top five.

The 5 Best Sports Stories To Get You Through The Dog Days of February

For sports fans, the stretch between the Super Bowl and MLB Opening Day can seem like an eternity. The NBA is great, but with half the teams making the playoffs, players mail it in on a regular basis this time of year, especially with this year’s condensed schedule. Hockey is a great sport to watch live, and the playoffs are intense, but getting psyched up to watch a random regular season game is tough even for the most ardent of fans. Luckily, there are a few sports stories out there to keep us going until our fantasy baseball drafts. Here are the top five to keep an eye on…

5 Greatest Rematches in Sports History

Four years ago the Giants and Patriots treated us to one of the best Super Bowls in league history, filled with all the drama any sports fan could ask for:  the Patriots seeking to become the first team to finish a season 19-0; Tom Brady looking to cap off one of the best statistical seasons of all-time; Eli Manning, just months after being called an epic bust leading his team to a game winning drive late in the 4th quarter; David Tyree’s one in a million catch…And now we get to watch it all over again.  Although the vast majority of players in this year’s Super Bowl did not play in their last matchup, this rematch will go a long way in defining the legacies of Tom Brady and Eli Manning, as well as Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin.  Rematches are something every losing athlete dreams of, leaving fans with fodder to discuss for generations.  Here are 5 other rematches that will be remembered forever:

5 Reasons Why Jorge Posada is a Hall of Famer

Jorge Posada’s retirement probably came one year too late.  Along with the announcement came the debates over whether he is Hall of Fame worthy.  The prevailing thought seems to be that he was a solid player who consistently put up decent offensive numbers, but he’s not quite good enough to belong.  The thinking behind it is, while 275 career home runs and over 1,000 RBI are nice, he’d have to be an extraordinary defensive catcher to get in, something he clearly was not.  But when you break down his career and compare it to the other 13 catchers who have been voted in to date, there’s a strong case to be made that he belongs. Be sure to check out TSG’s interview with COED Editor-in-Chief below the slideshow and tune in next week to see Neal in the studio.

5 Bold Sports Predictions for 2012

Unless you’re Biff Tannen, it’s awfully hard to get rich predicting sports.  Who the hell would’ve said a year ago that Indianapolis would be on the clock with the #1 Pick while the Bengals are prepping for a wild card showdown with the Texans?  Or that Adam Dunn would forget how to hit a baseball?  Nevertheless, predicting sports is what makes it exciting, and the one longshot you nail every decade provides a story worth bragging about for a lifetime (just ask the guy who won $375,000 on the Cardinals this fall).  So here are some predictions for 2012 that you should keep your eye on for 2012:

5 Tebow-Like Manias Over The Past 25 Years

What’s left to say about Tebow Mania that hasn’t already been said?  Despite the fact that 4 quarterbacks are currently on pace to break Dan Marino’s single season passing record, and the Green Bay Packers are knocking on the door to perfection, Tim Tebow remains the most compelling story of the 2011 football season.

Here is a guy who was literally getting laughed at on ESPN during the preseason; a guy who no one inside the NFL’s inner circle believed could succeed at the pro level.  And yet here is on the verge of the playoffs after taking a 1-4 team on a 7-1 rollercoaster ride, filled with 4th quarter comebacks and miraculous luck (Marion Barber inexplicably stepping out-of-bounds while trying to run out the clock, Mark Sanchez’s terrible pick six…).  He has single-handedly made the Broncos must see television and sports talk shows from coast to coast can’t take enough calls from folks needing their Tebow fix.

But as unique as his story might seem, we’ve seen plenty of athletes over the last few decades jump onto the scene and become larger than life phenomena overnight.  Here are five of those athletes:

5 Reasons To Watch The Mets In 2012

New Yorkers are innovators, always looking to do the impossible.  The New York Mets are embracing this attitude to the fullest.  Most would laugh at the idea that a team in the largest media market in the country, playing in a state of the art, $850 million stadium, could be considered a ‘small market team’.  Not the Mets!  After claiming a loss of over $70 million in 2011, the Mets declined to even make an offer to Jose Reyes, arguably one of the most talented homegrown players in franchise history.  Lord knows they aren’t going to land any of the big-name free agents on the market this year.  So after failing to make the playoffs for five straight seasons, who in their right mind would watch the Mets in 2012?  Well, here are five reasons to tune in:

The 5 Best MLB Managers in the Game Today

Bobby Valentine’s  return to managing stateside will be an interesting storyline all year.  Taking over for a team coming off an epic collapse, surrounded by embellished stories of an Animal House type clubhouse, the new Red Sox manager is walking into a tough situation.  But he just might be the perfect guy for the job.  While he’s known to most as one of the smartest minds in the game, the biggest knock on him is his reputation for wearing out his welcome wherever he goes.  With that lineup, Red Sox fans don’t care if his act gets old in a few years; they want to win now.  If he can get Carl Crawford playing up to his contract and get the staff to dispel the awful reputations they deservedly earned during the late season collapse, he’ll be a coach of the year candidate for sure.  Until then, here are the top 5 managers in the game today:

5 Reasons Why The UFC Surpassed Boxing

Saturday was a great night for sports fans.  Football fans had a slew of interesting games to watch, beginning with Penn State hosting Nebraska, and all the off the field hoopla that surrounded the game, and culminating with Oregon beating up on Stanford in the nightcap.  Basketball fans got to see Coach K cruise to his 902nd win, which tied him with Bobby Knight for the career lead.  But for me, I was most excited about Pacquiao-Marquez; after seeing the way these two fighters matched up in their first two fights, you knew it would be worth the $55 on PPV.  But what surprised me was that when I started calling my buddies to let them know I was renting the fight, every single one of them said they’d come by as long as we were also watching the UFC on Fox at 9:00.  Of course, the two events didn’t overlap so it was all the same to me, but it proved to me that in the key demographic of 18-34 year olds, MMA had clearly taken over as the king of combat sports.  Here are 5 reasons why this happened:

5 of the Most Epic Falls From Grace In Sports

Over his 45 year tenure at Penn State, Joe Paterno has amassed over 400 wins and won more bowl games than any coach in history, including 2 national championships. But in the blink of an eye, his entire legacy has been forever tarnished.  Regardless of the details that have yet to come out about what he did and did not know, he’ll forever be linked to the Jerry Sandusky scandal and will never be held in the same light again. This isn’t the first time a sports figure as revered as Joe Pa has turned from hero to pariah. Here are five others over just the past 20 years to fall from grace seemingly overnight:

5 Clubhouse Partiers That Put Boston’s Pitching Staff To Shame

The Red Sox collapse has gotten a ton of coverage and the blame seems to have shifted almost entirely to the revelation that Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and John Lackey drank beers and ate fried chicken during the game on their days off. While it might seem crazy to the novice fan, their antics pale in comparison to these five in-game partiers. Watch the Red Sox pitchers in Kevin Fowler’s “Hell Yeah, I Like Beer” music video then check out our list of top 5 in-game partiers below. Let us know if we missed any in the comments.
