Skins, American Idol, and Spartacus [TV THIS WEEK]

This week’s viewing schedule is jam-packed with action, adventure, and bad vocals. There are some new shows premiering as well as some old favorites returning. So warm up your channel-changing thumb and get ready for some action!

Skins – MTV – Monday, January 17, 10 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This series is the American version of the original hit British drama series following teenagers. I’m not convinced that making an American version was the best idea. Color me skeptical. Apparently they needed to change an English-language program into an American-language program. Go figure. Then again, it could be a hit…more like the American version of the British series The Office than the American version of Coupling. However, since the show’s original creators are involved, it’s worth a watch. Worse comes to worst, you’ve just spent an hour of your life watching scantly clad teens. Woe is you! In this episode, Tony helps Stanley lose his virginity. The series is jam-packed with sex, drugs, parties, and drama. Go ahead and get your Lohan on.

White Collar – USA – Tuesday, January 18, 10 p.m. (ET)

Back after a long absence, White Collar returns. When a clever criminal joins forces with the FBI, action is bound to ensue. Mozzie was shot, and Peter was suspended from the FBI. Who shot Mozzie? Will Peter clear his name? What antics is Neal up to now? As an avid TV viewer, I appreciate the action, adventure, mystery, and humor in this show. As a female, I appreciate series star Matt frickin’ Bomer. And your girlfriend will, too…so keep her away from the TV. Regardless of Matt Bomer’s dashing good looks, USA’s comedy-dramas are a resounding success and quite entertaining. For those of you into this sort of thing, USA’s Royal Pains and the new show Fairly Legal will also be on this week. But really, if you only have time for one USA show this week, White Collar is definitely your best, funniest, and most action-packed bet.

American Idol – Fox – Wednesday, January 19, 8 p.m. – Apocalypse (ET)

Season 10 premiere. Do I hear a collective groan? It’s still popular…just not as interesting as it used to be. Nonetheless, if you’re into music and condescending snark-isms, then this show is for you. But don’t count on seeing Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, or even Ellen DeGeneres. This season, it’s just Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler. We’ll always have Seacrest.

Fringe – Fox – Friday, January 21, 9 p.m. (ET)

This hit show is back on a new night. Why the new night, you ask? Because American Idol is a greedy time-slot hog. At least we get some new episodes. This week, Walter meets his favorite band’s keyboardist, while the Fringe team works to reverse an error.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena – Starz – Friday, January 21, 10 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This show serves as a prequel for the series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. This show follows life in the House of Batiatus. Batiatus runs his father’s gladiator training school. In this episode, he tries to find funding for a new arena. This show looks like it will be bloody, violent, and absolutely delightful. It’s so graphic, it’ll make a Hoplomachi seem like a Meridiani!

The Return of Tosh, Serious Sports, and Funny Sports [TV THIS WEEK]

The week ahead will bring you plenty of TV action. Reality, comedy, drama, and horror are all in store for this week. Here is what we’re looking forward to watching.

The X Life - VH1 – Monday, January 10, 10 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This reality show follows extreme athletes and the women in their lives. Featured athletes include Pierre Luc Gagnon, Cory “Nasty” Nastazio, and Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg. FMXers, BMXers, and skaters show you what it means to be extreme…and not in the “home makeover” sense. Ty Pennington can go “move that truck” himself.

Tosh.O – Comedy Central – Tuesday, January 11, 10 p.m. (ET)

Season 3 premiere. Comedian Daniel Tosh is back with more viral videos than you can shake a stick at. But why would you need a stick when you have shtick?

Lights Out – FX – Tuesday, January 11, 10 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This drama series follows a former heavy-weight champ. He retired after a controversial match, and is now experiencing problems with money and dementia. This is no joking matter. Making jabs would be below the belt.

Onion SportsDome – Comedy Central – Tuesday, January 11, 10:30 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This show satirizes the world of sports, think of it as a sporty version of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Finally…a comedy show with some balls.

Behemoth - Syfy – Saturday, January 15, 9 p.m. (ET)

Syfy original movie. Scientist go to study a volcano and instead find a gargantuan monster in this horror flick. CGI, a centuries-old monster, and massive destruction…it’s just like a trip down the red carpet with Joan Rivers.

Now that all that holiday hubbub is over, it is time to settle back in to a satisfying and rewarding TV schedule. A lot of shows are premiering this week, so try not to get too overwhelmed. Here are the shows that we’re looking forward to.

V – ABC – Tuesday, January 4, 9 p.m. (ET)

Season 2 premiere. The red sky continues. Riots break out. There are concerns about Anna’s leadership ability. The new year hasn’t been kind to everyone. Pour a little more champagne. It’ll all be fine.

Wipeout - ABC – Thursday, January 6, 8 p.m. (ET)

Fourth season premiere. This episode is all wintery, featuring a ski lift, snow, avalanches, and ice. Confusingly Christmasy for January, but we’ll take it. We don’t hate on holidays…we’re not Dasher bashers or Hanukkah haters. Kwanzaa? Right on-zaa!

Bob’s Burgers - Fox – Sunday, January 9, 8:30 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This animated series follows the family of a restauranteur. In this episode, a health inspector pays them a visit. Mmm..hygiene. Food safety is fun!

The Cape - NBC – Sunday, January 9, 9 p.m. (ET)

Two-hour series premiere. In this series, an ex-cop tries to become a super hero. He’ll even battle a villain in the premiere episode. Apparently he’s a prodigy. The cast includes perennial sci-fi favorite Summer Glau. Tune in for some hot, taut superhero action…All related to the most underused garment.

Not into it? Avoid Fox at all costs.

Psych - USA – Wednesday, December 22, 10 p.m. (ET)

Season 5 finale. Shawn and Gus need Yang’s help to capture the elusive Yin, who has recently kidnapped a woman. It’s a fun trip with Shawn, Gus, and the former-accomplice serial killer, Yang. This will wrap up the Yin/Yang trilogy…or will it? Okay, it probably will. No more Ali Sheedy for you.

American Ninja Warrior - G4 – Thursday, December 23, 8 p.m. (ET)

Two back-to-back hours of Americans competing to compete in the Japanese show, Ninja Warrior. This week, the finalists travel to Japan, where they finally find their way to Mount Midoriyama and the finals finally finish.

Doctor Who - BBC America – Saturday, December 25, 9 p.m. (ET)

As a very special Christmas gift, BBC America is giving Americans the chance to watch the Doctor Who Christmas episode on Christmas day. In it, Amy and Rory are in a space liner that is about to crash. The Doctor helps an old guy in order to save his friends. The logistics of this may be hard to understand. Like many TV show Christmas episodes, it is based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. That Carol sure gets around.

Psych College Tour: How Do You Like Them Pineapples?

That’s right, folks! Everyone’s favorite show about a fake psychic and his pharmaceutical-selling wry-ally will be hitting up ten colleges across the country. Each campus will host Psych-related activities, including a sneak peek at the new fall episodes.

The events will be hosted by a Psych writer, as well as the shows creator/comic genius Steve Franks. Show stars James Roday (Shawn) and Dulé Hill (Gus) will even be making special appearances at select events.

There will also feature Q&A sessions as well as trivia challenges. And if that’s not enough, fans will have the opportunity to win fully-loaded iPads and Psych collectibles.

James Roday and Dulé Hill are ready for the challenges of returning to college. According to Hill, “Anybody wants to offer me a shot; I’ll definitely take a shot.” Roday adds “I’m hoping to get in on final exams, maybe a couple of essays.”

The tour schedule is as follows:

Monday 10/25: The University of Florida

Thursday 10/28:  The University of Oregon

Monday 11/1:  The University of Georgia

Tuesday 11/2: Boston University

Wednesday 11/3: The University of Texas at Austin

Thursday 11/4: The University of California, Santa Barbara

Monday 11/8: Arizona State University and The University of Michigan

Tuesday 11/9: Northwestern University

The tenth and final school will be announced next week on the show’s Facebook page.

Since Psych has given you so much, encourage your university to give back! Hill says “I’m hoping that one of these colleges will give me an honorary degree.” You can also join the Facebook campaign to get  James Roday and Dulé Hill to host Saturday Night Live. Roday, says ” “If we ended up somehow going on SNL, we’d promise to be funny…We’d be down for just about anything.” Come on, guys…You hooked Betty White up!

Can’t make it to the tour? Lucky for you, the series is returning with new episodes on Wednesday, November 10 at 10/9c. This season promises to bring a plethora of guest stars, more on creepy serial killer Mr. Yin, and a Twin Peaks-inspired episode, which Roday is exceptionally excited about. “I can’t say I’ve ever been more proud of anything we’ve accomplished on the show.” Note: Watch or TiVo the first airing of this episode, or you’ll miss out on seeing this special, extended edition.

But that’s not all the new episodes have to offer. According to Roday, an episode late in the season will feature “…a polar bear whose been accused of murder.” Hill adds, ““I’ve asked a lot of questions about how that interaction is going to go down. ‘How are we going to shoot this scene? Because this bear is in front of our faces.’” Additionally, Dulé Hill’s character, Burton Guster, may be interested in a special lady (not a polar bear, but perhaps equally as dangerous). Hill describes this as an “infatuation with a relative of Lassiter.”

According to Hill, “We’re a fun show. It’s a show people can relate to….it makes people laugh.”

TV This Week: Zombies, Werewolves, and Amityville

This week in television will bring you plenty of creepiness and a little bit of reality. So, tune in and freak out.

Raising Hope - Fox – Tuesday, October 26, 9 p.m. (ET)

One hour of goodness! Maw Maw goes trick-or-treating. Well, really more of hick-or-treating.

Dance Cam Slam - VH1 -Tuesday, October 26, 10 p.m .(ET)

Series premiere. Participants make dance videos. It’s like YouTube, but less judgmental. So put on your tap shoes and best sequined jumper and get to work!

Police Women of Dallas - TLC – Thursday, October 28, 9 p.m. (ET)

Season four premiere. The series is now in Dallas. The women fight crime, Texas style (ie, with hairspray and a drawl).

Ancient Aliens - History Channel – Thursday, October 28, 10 p.m. (ET)

Season 2 premiere. This episode features “mysterious places.” Area 51. The Pyramids. The inside of Snooki’s poof.

Jersey Shore - MTV -Thursday, October 28, 10 p.m. (ET)

Season 2 reunion. Prepare your fists, for they will need to pump.

Wreck Chasers - TLC - Thursday, October 28, 10 p.m. (ET)

Season premiere. Following tow-truck drivers. They’ll gladly truck you off.

Red: Werewolf Hunter - Syfy – Saturday, October 30, 9 p.m. (ET)

Syfy original movie. Little Red Riding Hood’s descendants hunt werewolves. I kid you not.

Amityville: The Final Testament - A&E – Sunday, October 31, 8 p.m. (ET)

The convicted Amityville killer is interviewed. But if you’re looking for ectoplasm and green ooze, look elsewhere. This is a real guy.

The Walking Dead - AMC – Sunday, October 31, 10 p.m. (ET)

Series premiere. This horror series is based on the comic book of the same name. Finally, the survivors of the zombie apocalypse have their own show! I guess you could call this “hell-evision.”
