Clash Of The Titans…Again!

Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans is set to hit cinema screens on April 2nd, nearly 30 years after the original movie was released, and I can’t wait to see Perseus pit himself against giant scorpions, creatures from the underworld, and massive sea monsters. The film is packed with stars, such as Sam Worthington, Qui-Gon Jinn himself, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and  Gemma Arterton.

Multipic

clash_of_the_titans_12Perseus, a God who was raised on earth as a man and is the son of Zeus (Neeson),  has yet to grasp the immense power he has within himself to control his destiny. After being helpless to save his family from Hades and with nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a suicide mission to bring Hades down. If they are unsuccessful in their quest, Hades will overthrow Zeus and Hell will be unleashed on earth.
We follow Perseus and his group of warriors on their journey into the unknown,  as they try to defeat Hades and many other demonic creatures. The Kraken makes an appearance, looking Medusaa lot better than the original monster, and more like something from Gears of War. Also trying to stop Perseus from succeeding in his mission, is the most memorable of the gorgons, Medusa, and the once king, now a hideous beast, Acrisius.  From the trailers we can see that Pegasus has not been left out and i can only hope the annoying metal owl from the original film has been trashed. Concept designer Aaron Sims said that creating Medusa was the most difficult project he has worked on, with an early version looking similar to Voldemort from the popular Harry Potter books and movies.

Clash of the titansclash-of-the-titans

The film is directed by Louis Leterrier, who took the helm after Stephen Norrington pulled out because he was not familiar enough with the 1981 version. Leterrier, best known for directing The Incredible Hulk,  brought some of the hulks crew on board the Clash of the Titans behind the scenes team. Three new writers worked on the screenplay, along with the writer of the original film, Beverley Cross, to bring this classic up-to-date. We know for sure that the chess playing idea from the original has been removed by the new writers.

The sound track was going to be created by Muse’s Matt Bellamy, but with upcoming tour dates he wasn’t able to commit. So Incredible Hulk composer Craig Armstrong stepped in, along with ZeusMassive Attack’s Neil Davidge. . Director Letterier has already expressed interest in Clash of the Titans becoming a franchise, with a wealth of heroes and monsters to choose from for follow-up movies.
This movie looks set to blow the box office away, with its big budget, all action, 3D, reboot of a classic story.

Movies This Week: March, 19, 2010

Movies premiering this week feature witches, bounty hunters, rock stars and time machines; so it goes without saying that there’s a little something for everyone. And maybe I’m speaking too soon, but it looks like there are more hits than misses for a change. So check out our reviews,  order up your extra-large bucket of popcorn, and get ready to wildly  entertained.

The Bounty Hunter

Gerard Butler (Law Abiding Citizen, Gamer) stars  as a bounty hunter (just like Dog!) whose next target is his ex-wife/reporter, Jennifer Aniston.  After he tracks her down, he finds that everything isn’t going to be as easy as he thought, and the couple end up running for their lives.  I don’t want to spoil the ending, but let me just take a wild guess that these two cooky ex’s end up getting back together.

Season Of The Witch

Nicolas Cage and his receding hairline return to the big screen in this medieval tale of witches and crusaders. Cage and his companion, RonHellboyPearlman are tasked with transporting a witch, who is allegedly responsible for the black plague, to an abbey where her powers can be destroyed. Now if only we could figure out how to destroy Cage. He’s the aging action star that just keeps going and going and going…

The Runaways

Based on lead singer Cherie Currie’s book, Neon Angel, The Runaways is a film about the band of the same name and their 2 year journey from up and coming rock stars to burn-outs. It’s based on a true story and stars Dakota Fanning as Cherie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. Rumor has it that this movie will have men across the country starting their countdown until Dakota’s 18th birthday.

Repo Men

This movie is set in the future where artificial organs are available as long as you sign a credit agreement. Here’s the catch (for all you alcoholics out there thinking it would be great to get a new liver),  if you don’t keep up with the payments, a repo man is sent to reclaim the organ. Everything changes for one of the repo men (Jude Law) when he gets an artificial heart and ends up on the run from his former co-workers.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Ridiculous plot line alert!  Four friends become disillusioned with their boring lives and while on a crazy, alcohol fueled night out, they get transported back to the year 1986 by, you guessed it, a hot tub. This is their chance to right the wrongs of their lives, and for one of the men, make sure he still exists! The star-studded comedy cast ( John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Lizzy Caplan and Crispin Glover) combined with the sheer idiocy of the plot means it will definitely break box office records and go on to become a cult classic.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

Based on an online comic and a series of best selling books, Diary of a Wimpy Kid tells the story of a wise cracking middle school student as he struggles to avoid social land mines with a variety of  schemes. For a family movie, this actually looks pretty funny in a Napoleon Dynamite kind of way. And by Napoleon Dynamite kind of way, we mean that you should grab your 9-year-old nephew, get him high, and take him to see the best movie of his young life.

City Island

Set on the outskirts of New York, City Island is a comedy drama about a chain reaction of events stemming from various family member’s secrets. Andy Garcia plays the dad, who works as a corrections officer, but dreams of being an actor. It looks pretty bad and we would recommend staying in this weekend over paying money to see this one.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

A poorly regarded journalist and a strange computer hacker team up to solve a 40-year-old murder case –only to find that their investigation is putting their own lives in danger. The wealthy clan at the center of their investigation are a tightly knit community that will do anything to protect their secrets. Sounds intriguing. We might go just to see exactly where this dragon tattoo is located.

Hey Disc Head! New to Blu Ray and DVD: March 19, 2010

Don’t give up your favorite seat on the couch just because the weather is getting nicer. There are  a few worthwhile movies coming out this week on Blu Ray and DVD, especially for fans of the supernatural and martial arts. Looking for a manly movie that will impress your friends and get your martial arts skills up to par? Check out the COED pick of the week, Ninja  Assassin.

The Fourth Kind

There has been an unusually high amount of mysterious abductions over the past 40 years in a remote region of Alaska. Dr Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) sets out to investigate, only to uncover evidence of Alien involvement. The fourth kind is the next step on from contact with aliens (ie. Encounters of the Third Kind). Makes you wonder what encounters of the fifth kind are…maybe some hot, steamy Alien Lovin‘?

Ninja Assassin

A young boy, Raizo, is taken from the streets and trained to be a top assassin by the evil Ozunu clan. He escapes and goes on a revenge mission, helped by a Europol agent, to kill his trainer and former master. Packed full of ninja stars, swords, Kung Fu experts, guns, and all out action… basically it’s awesome.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Robert Pattinson returns as a moody vampire, in the second installment of The Twilight Saga, in an effort to single-handedly destroy the horror genre. This time there’s more than just the vampires to worry about — there’s also a variety of supernatural creatures showing up. While I’m sure every 13-year old girl out there is wetting her pants in anticipation for this release, I’m going to pass.

Armored

A group of armored transport officers decide to plan a heist against their own company. Everything is planned to perfection until a witness interferes and everything starts to go wrong for the crew.  This action-packed thriller has tons of well-known faces that include Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno, and legendary “Graboid” hunter Fred Ward.

Did You Hear About The Morgans?

Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant team up in this rom-com drivel as a near perfect couple who have to run for their lives when a contract killer comes after them. Hilarious antics ensue and we’re sure there’s an awkward sex scene in there somewhere. Without a doubt, this is our number one pick to avoid this week.

The Dirty Dozen: Dirty Fighting Superheroes!

Comic fans rejoice!  Mega-Con, the second greatest comic show in America kicked off today!  If you’re in the Orlando area get out here!  And in honor of our favorite great Southeastern Comic-Con we’ve put together a list of the comic characters who refuse to fight fairly, the Dirty Dozen!

Punisher2The Punisher

The Punisher aka Frank Castle made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man in 1974. After his family are murdered because they witnessed a gangland shooting, Castle goes all vigilante, using his skills in martial arts, stealth tactics, guerilla warfare and a multitude of weaponry. To The Punisher, any form of violence is acceptable when dealing with criminals. The Punisher is easily recognizable by the large white skull on his chest.

divider-grey2

PreacherThe Preacher

Preacher first appeared in 1995 and as you’ve probably gathered, is a preacher. Well actually a preacher who bonded with the offspring of angel and a demon (very bad), gained powers that would rival God himself, and killed his congregation in the process. Due to the angel/demon offspring situation, the preacher must battle with his exactly 50/50 evil to good ratio, while traveling the US with his ex girlfriend and his drunk Irish vampire friend.

separator

wolverineWolverine

One of the most well-known mutants of the comic world, Wolverine, or Logan first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 (cameo last page) and first full appearance in #181, both comics from 1974.  Animal instincts, adamantium laced skeleton, retractable bone claws, enhanced physical abilities, regenerative capabilities and an “I take no crap from anyone” attitude makes Wolverine the ultimate killing machine, and of course, who wouldn’t want that awesome hairstyle.

separator

JC

Constantine

First appearing in 1985, John Constantine, also known as Hellblazer, is a demon hunter/sorcerer/exorcist from Liverpool, who really enjoys his smokes. Of course when you’re into things like the Occult from an early age, there’s not a lot of careers paths to choose from. Constantine fights the good fight, but he does it with questionable morality. His motivation for hunting demons is said to be to quench his appetite for adrenaline. Weirdness follows this guy.

separator

RorschachRorschach

Wearing a mask with a constantly changing ink blot design, Rorschach, or Walter Kovacs, has no obvious super abilities, although this doesn’t stop him kicking criminal ass. Skilled in gymnastics and boxing, Rorschach went on fighting the good fight while the other heroes had stopped.  He also has a penchant or succinct yet penetrative one liners that drive his enemies batty.

separator

lobo_statueLobo

Lobo came on to the scene via Omega Men #3 in 1983, and was DC’s answer to the Punisher and Wolverine – Smash Together. He’s an alien mercenary bounty hunter with super strength and toughness, and he enjoys mindless violence and intoxication. He’s personality is one of self centered-ness and blood lust, so much so that he is responsible for the destruction of his entire race. Go Lobo!

separator

V

V

V is the ultimate anti-establishment hero. Recognizable by his strange hat, long cloak, and Guy Fawkes face mask, V has skills in many areas including explosives, daggers and computer hacking. Basically everything you need to bring down a fascist government! He takes his name from the cell he was kept in when he was locked up in an asylum, and only one person has seen his face, which was described as, wait for it, ugly.

separator

HellboyHellboy

Hellboy was summoned by the Nazi occult in attempt to help them win WWII, but was saved by a group of american rangers, and raised as a normal boy by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm. He has various demonic powers, like super strength and toughness, and has a large stone fist (which previously belonged to the great spirits) for pummeling all kinds of huge beasts.

separator

BladeBlade

Blade aka Eric Brooks started life in a brothel where his mother was killed during labor by Deacon Frost, who was impersonating a doctor.  During the labor, some vampiric enzymes entered Blades bloodstream giving him a supernatural sixth sense and an usually long life.  He was then trained to be a master of the bladed weapon by an older hunter he saves from a vampire attack. Later when Blade is bitten by man-made vampire, Eric Morbius, he develops more vampire abilities, including Strength and speed, but retains his ability to walk in daylight, becoming the day-walker we all know today!

separator

Spawn

Spawn

Weighing over 450 pounds and composed completely of necroplasm, Spawn made his first appearance in 1992, in the comic of the same name.  His power comes from the symbiotic suit he wears, that feeds on the necroplasm in his body, and can protect him even if he is unconscious. Al Simmons was an assassin in a special US Security group, but he was double crossed and murdered by his superiors. Due to a life of violence and murder, Al found himself in Hell, where he made a deal with a demon, the Malebolgia,  and was resurrected as Hell Spawn!

separator

Marv Marv

He’s huge, he’s really strong, his toughness is off the scale and he carries a gun called Gladys. What’s not to like about Marv? Other than he’s border line psychotic who would kill you in an instant if he feels you deserve it.

separator

Riddick

Riddick

Riddick was born on Furya, and is the last of his kind. He survived the slaughter of his race and joined the military, where he learned his combat skills. After a few years, he was sent to Deep Storage, from which he escaped and got himself ‘wanted man’ status, with a million credit bounty on his head. Riddick got his serial killer label because every time he kills a merc, or bounty hunter, their death is added to his list of crimes. Riddick doesn’t care though.

It’s a big weekend for movie premieres — if you’re a Twilight fan. Otherwise you’ve got your basic action film,  your basic different minorities get married and hilarity ensues film, and your even more basic loser somehow gets the hot girl film. Matt Damon is back in action in this story exploring the events leading to the Iraq Invasion. When he uncovers faulty intelligence, he goes on a rogue operation to track down the suspected weapons of mass destruction in the unstable region named, The Green Zone. She’s Out Of My League

When he is arrested for the murder of a young girl, his mother does as much as she can to prove his innocence, whilst battling with uncooperative officers who are just looking to close the case.

Remember Me

Twilight star (well at least among teen girls!), Robert Pattinson plays a young rebellious New Yorker, who has a turbulent relationship with his father, Pierce Brosnan. After meeting a girl with similar family problems, he begins to fall in love and find meaning to his life. I can think of better ways to spend an hour and a half!

Our Take On Alice In Wonderland

Crazy old Tim Burton is at it again! This time its Alice in Wonderland, a sequel to the original Lewis Caroll classic books. Yet again, Mr Burton is shoving Johnny Depp in our faces in an attempt to re-ignite the flame that brought them so much success in the past. But with recent outings in Charlie and the chocolate factory and The Demon Barber falling well below par, it’s hard to know whether this movie will put the pair back on top.

All the characters from the original stories return, as once again, poor Alice finds herself in Wonderland. This time she’s in her late teens and remembers nothing from her previous journeys there. While at a country estate for her surprise engagement party, Alice sees a white rabbit in a waist coat running towards the garden maze. For reasons unknown, Alice feels the need to chase the rabbit into the garden maze and then somehow falls down another rabbit hole, into Wonderland. At this point, questions must be asked of Alice’s mental stability. Who goes chasing rabbits? Lock this girl up!

Once in Wonderland, Alice reunites with the figments of her imagination her childhood friends, and they tell her that they need her help to overthrow the Red Queen (Not the resident evil one!), who has taken over all of wonderland. Alice agrees and her mission to stop the Queen gets underway. I say forget all that nonsense and go find the giant shrooms and smoking caterpillar!

Alice in Wonderland has a host of well known faces appearing including the already mentioned Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen (with a triple sized head), Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, and Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit. Legendary Dracula actor, Christopher Lee also stars as The Jabberwocky (From a crazy poem!), and UK funny men represent, in the form of Alan Rickman, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry and Paul Whitehouse.

As with all Tim Burton films, all the original characters get the dark and Gothic make over, making for some freaky looking individuals. Check out Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, that’s nightmare stuff right there! And the Cheshire cat is a far cry from the colorful original character.

This may not turn out to be one for the lads, but at least Alice (Mia Wasikowska) looks good, in a girl next door kind of way, and you can look forward to the “Cute but Psycho” white queen, Anne Hathaway, looking extremely hot, and also a little strange. (awesome gallery here)

Alice hits the screens on 5 March 2010. Check out the trailer below!

Vandal Hearts: Flames Of Judgment

Have you got MS points burning a hole in your virtual pocket? You could spend them on getting a ridiculous outfit for your avatar, but why not spend them on something more enjoyable? Like Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment!
Currently available for download via Xbox live marketplace and PSN, Vandal Hearts is a strategic RPG arcade game, where you control a team of 6 characters, each with specific skills, as they try to stop bad things happening. The bad things in this case are mostly bandit types. You know? The type that are always up to no good. The 6 characters are all orphans of Balastrade who survived the Great War. They were settling into normality again, and rebuilding their lives, when out of no where, Bandits attack their village. The 6 orphans must build their skills by beating enemies, and the player has the choice of which skills they want to be more prominent. Characters can focus on magic, where new spells can be bought throughout the game and which consist of Defense spells, Healing Spells, Augmentation Spells, and obviously, Attack Spells. If magic isn’t your thing, then you can focus more on Melee attacks with a number of large sharp objects available for your character to purchase. Lastly, there’s the long range option of Bow and Arrows, which again can be upgraded by buying the newest and best equipment.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how good your characters are if you cant think up a good strategy. In each battle there are 1 or 2 characters that must survive in order for the story to continue. If you don’t take care of these particular characters, then your screwed! Enemies seem to know this as well, and they will sometimes gang up on one character, and wipe him out in no time, and before you have a chance to retaliate.

I must admit, I’m not into these strategy types of games, but Vandal Hearts totally sucked me in, with its addictive and fairly fast paced battles. The RPG aspect appealed to me most, with the leveling up and acquiring of new equipment. Each stage of the story is infinitely re-playable, so if your having trouble in a battle, you can go back and re-do older battles to gain more gold, and experience. There are also a host of different endings to the story, which are controlled by decisions the player must make during the game, and again add to the re-playability of this title.

You may know the Vandal Hearts name from your childhood, as there was a series of Vandal Heart games out for the PSone, of which Flames Of Judgment is a prequel. Konami hope this new addition will regenerate the franchise and bring new fans, as well as nostalgic old fans back to the game. Check out the demo for Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment, available on the Xbox live marketplace and Playstation Network.

Sorority Row

After a girl gets killed in a sorority prank, the culprits decide to dump the body to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. Unfortunately, someone knows what they did. The Crazies

Another classic remake from the master of the zombie genre, George A. Romero. Set in a perfect, sleepy, little American town, with law abiding citizens (Not a Gerard Butler in sight), and where nothing much happens. Starting slowly, random residents of the town start committing violent and nonsensical acts. Soon the whole town is going nuts, and a small group of survivors fight for their lives, against the “insanity” infection. Gore fueled, blood splattered, Zombiefest!

Cop Out

Bruce Willis plays an NYPD officer on the hunt, with his partner, for a stolen, rare baseball card, to pay for his daughters wedding. Directed by Kevin Smith, it seems this movie was a long time coming, with Smith wanting to work with Willis again since Die Hard 4, quite a few years ago. Also stars 30 Rock‘s Tracey Morgan.

Defendor

With a lack of any super powers, (and spelling ability!) Woody Harrelson plays Arthur Poppington – Traffic director by day, Defendor by night. He mistakenly stumbles upon the criminal underworld, and starts his one man fight to take down gun trafficking crime lord, Captain Industry. The story is told by Arthur, while he is sitting with a court appointed psychologist. Sounds like a laugh, and I’m sure it will continue Woody’s recent run of success.

The Art Of The Steal

This is a documentary about Albert C Barnes, a well known art collector from the late 1800s. He amassed a huge collection of art work from various well known artist, but must constantly battle against the politics of the Philadelphia Art Scene. Sounds interesting, but not worth seeing in the cinema.

The Yellow Handkerchief

A petty criminal who’s fresh out of jail persuades two road-tripping teens to give him a lift to his hometown and for some reason they agree. Didn’t their mothers tell them about strangers! The three bond on their journey over their need for acceptance. Give it a miss. I doubt even your girlfriend would be entertained by this.

A Prophet

Tells the story of a young Arabic man, who is thrown into a nightmarish, French prison. He soon finds the opportunities presented to him behind bars are a lot better than when he was a free man. The story follows his descent into the criminal underworld as he makes more and more dangerous connections.

Movies This Week: February, 19, 2010

Shutter Island

Scorsese and DiCaprio team up again in this Drama set in 1954 about a psychotic female murderer who escapes from a hospital for the criminally insane, on Shutter Island. Two US Marshals are sent to track her down before she causes anymore fatalities. This could be a surprise hit for Scorsese, despite the release delay and rumors of marketing shortfalls. Dawson’s Creek hottie, Michelle Williams, plays the murderess being hunted by the Marshals. I’d let her get away with anything!

The Ghost Writer

A miserable, cynical writer, Ewan McGregor, is hired to finish to memoirs of a disgraced British Prime Minister, Pierce Brosnan, in this conspiracy thriller, but when he delves too deeply into the Prime Ministers past, he finds a shocking scandal and becomes a hunted man. Not my type of flick, but its being tipped as Roman Polanskis best work for years. Watch out for similarities to real-life ex Prime Minister, Tony Blair, if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Last New Yorker

A couple of life long friends from New York, Lenny and Ruben, barely  recognize the place where they grew up. Now in their 70′s, the dynamic duo decide to pursue the one thing that has always been missing in their lives, love. Stars Uncle Junior from The Sopranos aka Dominic Chianese. American Pie for the over 60′s!

The Good Guy

A young conservationist, Beth, wants everything – a good job, good friends, and a good man to share her life with. Unfortunately, The Good Guy focuses on the latter, and has been described as a “romantic dramedy”, so unless your looking to get into your girlfriend’s good books, give it a miss.

Toe To Toe

Two young girls at a prep school become close friends on the Lacrosse field, but find that their different lifestyles and family situations become the things that drive them apart. Inspired by a statistic – interracial friendships end at age 14 for 87% on American teens – Random.

Hey Disc Head! New to Blu Ray and DVD: February 19, 2010

Law Abiding Citizen

Gerard Butler turns on the Hard Man routine for this action thriller, where he plays a sociopath, Clyde Shelton, hell-bent on avenging his family’s murder. Jamie Foxx is the prosecutor, Nick Rice, who gave a light sentence to one of the murderers, and 10 years later, is the only person who can stop Shelton’s rain of terror. Sounds like The Punisher to me!

Black Dynamite

He’s Super Bad, He’s outta Sight. He is Black Dynamite! That says it all really. This action spoof of 70′s Blaxploitation movies, features Michael Jai White as a former CIA Agent whose brother is brutally murdered by, none other than, The Man. Black Dynamite sets out to avenge his brothers death, while taking down pimps, kung fu masters, and a variety of other foes. Did i mention he had nun-chucks? Awesome.(not like these guys!)

GoodFellas (20th Anniversary Edition)

A great mobster movie that’s still as good today as it was in 1990. If you haven’t seen this already, then there is something wrong with you. When five friends head out to a cabin in the woods for some merriment, they unknowingly come into contact with a flesh eating virus. Coco Before Chanel

Looking for a late Valentine’s Day present? Or maybe it’s your girlfriend/wife’s birthday? These are the only reasons any man should lay their hands on this movie. It’s the story of the early life of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, and it’s definitely a chick flick. Your in denial if you think otherwise.
