It’s apocalypse time (say, the third major apocalypse film this year) with Legion, starring Paul Bettany as Michael the Archangel who protects a band of people after God becomes fed up with humanity and sends legions of angels to dispose of us. But why protect these people, you (and probably God) might ask.  Well it turns out that an ordinary waitress may be pregnant with the second coming of Christ – Oh how awesomely Terminator-ish! Archangel Michael is a total angel ass kicking machine, stuff gets blown up, people get their throats ripped out – Your girlfriend will hate it!  Total must see for guys, and our applause to the people behind it for having the sack to put out a film that will no doubt get the church’s Superman underoos (follow me on that?) in a bunch.  Praise Michael!

Extraordinary Measures

Starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford as two guys teaming up to form a bio-tech company after finding out that Fraser’s kids have an incurable, fatal disease. As they both go in pursuit of the same goal with different drives, “one driven to prove himself and his theories, the other by a chance to save his children, this unlikely alliance eventually develops into mutual respect as they battle the medical and business establishments in a fight against the system – and time.”   Sounds good but the word is it was shot in a soft lens reminiscent of a Lifetime movie – Proceed with caution.  The lifetime thing wight be some negotiating coin for an after hours session – use it.

Creation

Limited Release

Not in the mood to see Paul Bettany as Michael the Archangel in Legion? Well you can see him play a completely opposite role as Charles Darwin in Creation, which chronicles the journey made in writing the book “On the Origin of Species,” which goes on to become the foundation for evolutionary biology. Also starring Jennifer Connelly as his sexy wife, or is that the sexy Jennifer Connelly as his wife? Given this is the 1800s, it’s probably the latter.  Either way this move was very intellignetly designed, which is a hell of a lot more (pun intended) that anyone can say about creationism., but don;t believe me.  Watch the movie.  And if we’re wrong . . .see you in hell.

To Save a Life

Limited Release

One of those “save one life, save multiple lives in the process,” movies where a high school outcast heads to campus with a handgun, and “makes a tragic move.” As Jake Taylor examines his own life and what pushed his friend to do what he did, he starts acting differently in school and more accepting of everyone around him…which in turn pushes those he thought he loved further away. Well good for him I suppose, though I’m trying to figure out if this movie has a bit more of a meaty message than the ol’ “let’s all get along” philosophy.

Tooth Fairy

Just a few years ago, The Rock was facing off against Christopher Walken in the Rundown, taking on an entire village with his sheer strength and dual-wielding shotguns, after taking out the entire New England Patriots defensive line in a nightclub, which was after a quick salutation cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger (essentially passing the all American action hero baton to the Rock). Now he’s Dwayne Johnson as a Fairy in the Tooth Fairy, who proclaims “We can’t handle the Tooth!”

I’d like to take this moment and apologize to “The Spy Next Door” last week for making fun of Jackie Chan and the movie. Apparently there is something lower than a bottom of a barrel.  Rock – we finally know what that smell is, you cheesy sell-out.  If ever there was a guy to inherent to action hero mantle . . .now Will Smith and Ted Theodore Logan are our only hope.

Hey Disc Head: New On DVD and Blu Ray January 19th, 2010

Lots of comedy this week with great stand up, a new comedy from Ricky Gervais, and an action movie where gamers are directly controlling prisoners in a battle with their lives in a simulated video game. People controlling other people as avatars in a completely different realm? No wonder it bombed in the box office.

Gamer

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Gamer is the type of movie where, had it been made in the 80s, would feature Arnold Schwarzenegger and some nameless hot girl with a few good one liners and some good action (and in fact it kinda was made, as The Running Man). Sadly movies this day and age tend to be overly dramatic, serious, and not much fun. Gerard Butler stars as a prisoner who’s in a world controlled by Gamers, using their bodies as avatars in a real life and death game. It’s action packed and not quite as over the top as it should have been, but you pretty much know the kind of movie you’re getting with the trailer, so why complain?

Artie Lange: Jack and Coke

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Artie Lange (of Howard Stern fame) hasn’t really been doing all that well lately, to say the least. Relive the golden moments with Artie Lange: Jack and Coke, a stand up special that shows what a good comedian Artie could be, and will hopefully be in the future. Unfortunately the age of this special shows with some of the more topical jokes sounding a bit old, but at least there are a pile of exclusives to enjoy. There are no Blu-Ray exclusives, so if you can find the DVD cheaper than go for it, unless you can only have your Lange served up in high definition.

The Invention of Lying

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Ricky Gervais stars as Mark in this alternate reality where lies don’t exists, and Mark stumbles upon it more or less by accident. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. The plot unfolds as Mark lies his way to bed with the ladies as they believe his every word, and soon a whole mess of trouble lands right on Mark’s lap. Well, not necessarily because of the sleeping part, though I’m sure that didn’t help. Be sure to check out the extras with Gervais as the guy is funny (or one would argue, funnier) off camera just as much as he is on it.

Aziz Ansari’s Intimate Moments For A Sensual Evening

Releasing on DVD

Aziz Ansari has had quite a bit of a career mini-explosion as part of the Human Giant troupe, a funny part in Funny People and other movies, as well as a hilarious supporting role in Parks and Recreation on NBC. Now you can watch his stand up in Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, which aired on Comedy Central this month. How big is this for Aziz? “It’s bigger than the time I filled up my Quiznos Q Rewards Card, but smaller than the time I filled up four Quiznos Q Rewards Cards,” he told EW Magazine. Sounds like delicious entertainment, har har.

The Bourne Trilogy

Re-release on dual Blu-Ray/DVD disc

Yes, this has been released before already on Blu-Ray and DVD, so what gives? Well, Universal is experimenting with a new Blu-ray tech that people either love or hate: flipper discs. One side is the Blu-Ray edition, and just flip that disc over for the DVD edition of the film. Great to have if you like sharing your movies with friends, I suppose, and brings the current format to get your movies on up to five (DVD, Blu-Ray, Digital Copy, downloadable distribution and now flipper discs.) I’m glad the format wars are all behind us, eh?

New in Videogames: Highlights for January 2010

While these last few months have been massive in terms of blockbuster releases, this month still has a solid selection of action-packed games to plow through. Among the releases for January include:

Bayonetta

Coming January 5th to PS3/360

Nothing says “Japanese-made” like a power that summons a humongous heel from the heavens to squash your opponents to the ground. That’s par for the course in Bayonetta, a fast paced action slicer in the vein of the Devil May Cry series. This game certainly isn’t for everyone given it’s extreme weirdness and somewhat complex fighting mechanics, but it’s certainly a trippy ride to experience. Just check the trailer below to see what I mean.

Watch the Japanese TV Spot!

Army of Two: The 40th Day

Coming January 12th to PS3/360/PSP

Battle your way through China as everything starts splodin’, Michael Bay style. Buildings fall, people die, and it’s just you and your partner along with a huge assortment of weapon customization. Everything is twice as good when you’re playing with a friend, and Army of Two: The 40th Day is pretty much non-stop co-op whether it’s split screen, online, or just an AI bot at your side. Why you would play by yourself on a game specifically created for two players, I’m not sure, but it’s there.

Watch the Trailer

Dark Void

Coming January 12th to PC/PS3/360

The concept of Dark Void is to “fly anywhere, fight everywhere” as you take to the skies with your jetpack and weapon-wielding skills. Dark Void might be one of the first games to be optioned by Hollywood for a movie before it’s even released. Looking at the trailer I don’t really understand why, but at least the game looks like a hell of a fun time. It’s pretty much everything the Iron Man game should have been.

Watch the Trailer

Mass Effect 2

Coming January 26th to PC/360

Shepard’s back as you battle dudes in space in this epic adventure! Amass your party and travel to the ends of the universe as you follow quests and engage in combat with your trusty array of weaponry. Your original Mass Effect save will carry over to this game as you continue the story, so if you haven’t played the original you can find it pretty cheap in most stores. As the sequel carries on almost exactly where the original left off, it’s probably a good idea to start there than to go with ME2 if you haven’t played the series yet.

MAG

Coming January 26th to PS3

From the creators of SOCOM comes MAG, which stands for Massive Action Game. Well…alright then. But given that this games has 256 online player battles, maybe MAG is the best name for this massively huge game. It’s a bit more tactical than your standard shooter, so Modern Warfare vets might not feel quite at home here, but it’s worth trying out just to see how they pull off 256 players all at once. There’s no single player campaign, just all multiplayer, all the time.

Movies This Week: January 15th, 2010

Turn around ladies . . .There's a God Somewhere!

Denzel Washington stars in The Book of Eli as a lone hero who must fight his way across the wasteland of a post-30-year apocalyptic America to protect a sacred book that holds the key to saving the future of humanity. What that book contains, or holds, is a mystery that even the trailers and marketing won’t reveal, which is kinda refreshing given how most marketing campaigns are all too eager to spell out the entire plot for you in two minutes. And hey, there seems to be plenty of ass-kickery and splodin’ entertainment to go around for those just looking for an action packed flick, so go for it!

44 Inch Chest

Limited Release (DC/NY/LA, San Diego Jan. 29th)

44 Inch Chest (not what you’re thinking) stars Ray Winstone as Colin, a man who, faced with his wife’s infidelities, watches as his friends kidnap his wife’s lover and brings him to an empty room where Colin wonders what the hell he’ll do next. Back and forth he goes, as he “wrestles with revenge, remorse, grief and self pity, all the while egged on by his motley crew of friends who just want him to get on with it so they can get down the pub.” Stars a nice array of people that includes the always interesting Tom Wilkinson, who can sometimes light up a screen simply with his appearance.

Fish Tank

Limited Release

A hugely popular film released in the UK last year, Fish Tank tells the story of Mia, a fifteen year old troublemaker recently suspended from school, who falls for Colin, a man who is Mia’s mother’s new lover. Whoops! Things are sure to get ugly as the mother’s anger is not “with the man who has slept with her underaged daughter, but the girl who is now a rival for the affections of her lover.” This coming of age story unfolds in what some have called one of the best films in British Cinema.

The Last Station

Limited Release (NY/LA)

Helen Mirren stars in this period piece about a lady cheated out of her inheritance, in a sense. You see, her husband (in the name of his newly created religion) renounces his noble title, his property and even his family in favor of poverty, vegetarianism and even celibacy. She’s quite upset given the fact that she’s bore him thirteen children and has been a “devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary,” though perhaps not necessarily in that order. And so the film goes, with another romance here and a twist of the plot there, until a whimsy of an ending arrives, I’m sure.

Watch the Trailer

The Spy Next Door

The only other film to open widely this weekend is The Spy Next Door and…ugh, ok, I’m going to get through this synopsis as painlessly as possible. Jackie Chan stars as Bob Ho, a super secret agent who’s about to tackle his biggest assignment yet…babysitting! And so he takes care of three children as he prepares lunch with hilarious results, trips over a water hose the children set as a trap, and attempts to speak the teen vernacular with all the appropriate hand gestures. But as his partner Billy Ray Cyrus points out, “Spying is easy, babysittin’ is hard!” Oh Billy Ray, you have no idea how hard it is, if Bob Ho’s experience is anything to go by, bwahaha! Towards the end we see Bob enlist the kid’s help to tackle a dangerous villain, and watch as the kids come to respect Bob. Also stars George Lopez as…no, that’s it, I can’t go on. Just…don’t. I don’t want to think about this film anymore.

And that’s all the releases for this week! Not much, sure, but you can always see Avatar again.

Hey Disc Head: New On DVD and Blu Ray January 12th, 2010

Something for everyone this week, with an Oscar-contending action/drama flick, another season of one of the longest running series on television, as well as some good ol’ fashion horror to boot:

The Hurt Locker

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

If you take a look at some of the top critic’s choices for best films of 2009, you’re going to see the Hurt Locker somewhere on there, and for good reason: this is a pretty damn awesome movie. It’s about staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner), who does one thing: defuses bombs in Iraq. If he does his job well, he gets to go back to base. If he doesn’t, he’s dead. And there’s not a single other place James would rather be. The tagline of the movie, “War is a Drug,” should clue you in on some of the characters in the film, and this movie certainly has it’s share of tense and explosive moments. It’s one of the biggest frontrunners in this season’s Oscar race.

Watch the Trailer

Halloween II

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

And on the complete other side of the spectrum is Halloween II, which makes no apologies for what it is, and what it does. Michael Myers returns to his hometown to “finish up some unfinished business” and the town has “an unlikely new hero, if they can only stay alive long enough to stop the unstoppable.” Is it possible they will achieve the impossible? Will they move the immovable? Can they destroy the undestroyable? All these questions answered, maybe, in this sequel that somewhat fizzled at the box office. The Blu-ray has some spiffy extra content in a new unrated version (or as the movie would say, rated unrated.)

Watch the Trailer

Whiteout

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Whiteout stars Kate Beckinsale as a US Marshal investigating the first murder in Antarctica, with only three days left until the winter storms. Given the fact that, oh I dunno, only so many people live in Antarctica within miles and miles of each other, you would think this would be easy, but no! This is an almost slasher type movie, with an almost supernatural killer on the loose. It’s slasher roots go right down to the fact that the sexiest girl still has time to strip down for some on-screen sensuality (yeah, I know it’s a shower scene, but there’s a difference between, “gah, I need to shower all this grime off,” and, “ahh yeah, it’s shower time.” Which the two minute trailer does not neglect to show off, by the way.)

Watch the Trailer

Cliffhanger

Available on DVD/ Releasing on Blu-Ray

Now, if you want a real winter-action-thriller, then be sure to check out Cliffhanger, one of my personal favorites from Sylvester Stallone. As a botched mid-air robbery from the US Treasury comes literally crashing down in the snowy mountains (did I mention it was a mid-air robbery from two separate planes?), the bad guys wreck their private jet, surrounded by snow. Calling on the emergency rescue team, a band of movie licensed regulars surrounding the big name star (aka one dead guy, one maybe dead guy, one hot chick, one Stallone) jump into action, and are unknowingly going to help the bad guys find their money. If anything this movie convinced me that you could have a fight between John Lithgow and Sylvester Stallone, and make it reasonable that Lithgow could actually win.

The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

You’re either enjoying the Simpsons every Sunday or enjoying fond memories of the past before it turned sour, whenever that season might have been for you, but there’s no denying the…uh…length that the Simpsons has been on. But whether or not you agree that the show might not be exactly what it used to be, it still provides a good amount of entertainment and fun. Still, it’s a bit strange to see topical plots like Lisa enjoying her “Mypod” and Homer’s suspicions of terrorism when Bart meets a Muslim boy from Jordan (S20E7), given that the characters themselves have hardly aged over the last twenty years.

Hey Disc Head: New On DVD and Blu Ray January 5th, 2010

January is a typical wasteland of DVD/Blu-Ray releases as most studios blow their wad in December, leaving mostly category re-issues this week like Cheaper by the Dozen 2, available for the first time on Blu-ray. Uh . . . great.

But there are a few releases this week worth noting, particularly the most finalist OF all the Final Destinations to date and a few good TV shows boxed seasons including:

Chuck: The Complete Second Season

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

If you haven’t gotten into Chuck stop reading this now and go buy this box set.   The third season gears up this month, so there’s no better time to jump on board with a weekend marathon of series 1 & 2.  Chuck is an action-comedy about tech nerd (Like me!) who receives a” Neo” like download of the world’s greatest spy secrets directly to the brain (unlike me : ( so sad, so very sad).  Hilarity ensues.

Nothing defines cult hit more than the Chuck series, on the brink of death the series was resuscitated after a fan led two-month “Save Chuck” campaign where fans stormed NBC with picthforks and torches (except the part about storming, pitchforks and torches)    The third season of Chuck  begins on Sunday, January 10, 2010 with a two hour premiere at 9/8c before moving to its permanent time slot of Mondays 8/7c.  So . . .you’re still here?!?!  Get going!

The Final Destination

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Watch as clueless young people, aware that Death is honing in on them after an apocalyptic vision from one of the main characters, die in disgustingly awesome ways as they proceed not to stay somewhere that’s, I dunno, safe. Though nothing is ever safe in these movies, so that point is probably moot (someone is killed by a pool drain in this movie. A pool drain.) Comes with both 2D and 3D versions of the movie if you like your movies ugly and difficult to see with the slightly added benefit of things kind of jumping out at the screen.

Dogtown and Z-Boys

Releasing on Blu-Ray/available now for DVD

Do you ever wonder who the hell thought of grabbing a piece of wood, slamming four wheels on it, and riding it down an empty swimming pool? Not since the invention of parkour has something required such balls to come up with, and the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys you get to see the origins of skateboarding with one group in California back in the 70s. These days it seems kinda weird to call skateboarding an extreme sport given the rise of Japanese florescent lightube fighting, but just youtubing “awesome skateboard accidents” clears that right up.

Sadly, no Schoolhouse Rocks between episodes.

Superfriends: Season 1, Volume 1

Go ahead and try to tell me that you’ve experienced anything more awesome in your life since Saturday mornings with The Superfriends . . .ok fine, excepting sex, drugs, awesome drunk girls, getting your car,  and payday . . .but forget those and you know I’m right!

Bam! Nostalgia Time.
