The 5 Sure-Fire Cult Classic Films of 2012 [VIDEOS]

February 16, 2012     Posted in Cool Stuff, Entertainment, Features, Heavy Player, Lists, Movies, Video, WTF

It’s a d*mn good year for movies. We’re all stoked for the big summer flicks like Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers only to get new films from Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, and the Coen brothers later in the year. Not too shabby. Every year, though, there are those few surprises that sneak in. The films you didn’t see coming. The ones destined to become cult classics. Movies so badass you simply need to share them with your friends (and a 6-pack) at a midnight viewing. Below are five of those 2012 releases sure to have their posters plastered on dorm room walls.

THE RAID

Watch this trailer and tell me that this isn’t going to be the best action movie…well, ever! The plot seems a little thin, but who cares when you have action as brutal as this. The movie is already being remade for American audiences, but you get the chance to be cooler than your friends when you tell them, “I saw the original.” (Opens March 23rd)

KILL LIST

Allow me to quote this ‘glowing’ twitter review, “Kill List…don’t ever watch it…sick and twisted film. The person who thought it up must be wrong in the head :(“ Now you know if this movie is for you or not. What starts out as a family drama, quickly turns into a hard-boiled hit-man movie, before descending in to utter madness.  The less you know the better. Director Ben Wheatley creates a sense of dread and doom that leaves you paralyzed in your seat. There are images in this film you will not soon forget. (In limited release and available on VOD/iTunes NOW)

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Don’t we all hate the awful, annoying, spoiled people we see on reality-TV shows?  What about that a**hole who took up two parking spaces? Sometimes we fantasize that the world might be a better place without them. However, that is where our fantasies end because we are sane and rational folk. Writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait (yes, that Bobcat Goldthwait!) is not so sane. He has taken all of our darkest thoughts and put them on film. Imagine a movie somewhere between Taxi Driver and Kick-A**. Now multiply the f*cked-up factor by 10. Check out the trailer and be shocked and grateful that this movie even got financed. (Opens in theaters May 11th. VOD release in April)

YOU’RE NEXT

Some seriously twisted f*ucks wearing animal masks are attempting to kill off an entire family and their guests one by one. Sounds like one of those movies where you yell at the idiots on the screen, “DON’T GO IN THERE!!!” Not this one. Here you have a “home-invasion” film in the vein of THE STRANGERS, but instead of the victims being scared and stupid, you have characters that decide to fight back. For every moment that has you cowering in fear there is another that will have you cheering at a crazy/inventive kill. A perfect mix of scary and fun. (Release Date TBA. No trailer… yet)

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

This movie just won awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A sort-of fairytale about a father and daughter who near the apocalypse. I guess you don’t need $200-million to make a movie about the end of the world as long as you have style and imagination. This movies sounds like a trippy, weird, and beautiful must-see movie. (Release Date TBA. No trailer… yet)
