Apparently, it’s a flower that’s named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1825. It’s often associated with Christmas and is also called “noche buena” which my 18 years of Spanish have told me means “good night” but actually means “Christmas Eve”.
