Hef: The Early Years [38 Rarely-Seen Photos]

For many college students, grads, and young professionals, a career path can be a cloudy one – a mixture of doubt and confusion, purpose and experimentation. For Mr. Hefner, it was a journey many others could sympathize with but no one has duplicated. He served as a writer for a military newspaper in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, worked as a copywriter for Esquire then raised $8,000 from 45 investors to launch Playboy. The rest is history. Dancing With The Stars’ Karina Smirnoff To Pose For Playboy

On Wednesday, Apr. 6, Mr. Hefner tweeted, “The May [2011] issue of Playboy is unforgettable with “Dancing With The Stars” Karina Smirnoff on the cover & nude inside.” I believe this is the first time a DWTS regular will appear nude in the magazine. Usually, it’s the other way around, a Playmate will appear (clothed) on DWTS. We welcome this role reversal with open eyes. However, PopEater revealed Karina might be released from the show because of it. Talk about double standards, ABC. The Ukrainian American professional ballroom dancer’s accomplishments include five-time U.S. National Champion, World Trophy Champion, and Asian Open Champion. This season, she’s paired with “Karate Kid” star Ralph Macchio and she’s also engaged to Tigers pitcher Brad Penny with a wedding tentatively set for October or November. Today’s Miss COED, Marilyn Monroe, was Playboy’s first ever Playmate, though back in December 1953 when the first issue was published, it was known as the “Sweetheart of the Month“. The traditional definition of “playmate” is one who is “a companion at play”. Mr. Hefner‘s version of a companion at play is an attractive female model who is featured in a pictorial that includes nude photos, a centerfold poster, a short bio, and a “Playmate Data Sheet” displaying birthdate, measurements, turn-ons, and turn-offs. Marilyn was a model, singer, and actress who was named “Sweetheart of the Month” in the first issue of Playboy magazine, which debuted in December 1953. She graced the cover of that issue, which featured her wearing a dress with a neckline cut almost to her navel when she acted as Grand Marshall at the Miss America Parade in September 1952, and while a nude photograph of Monroe, taken in 1949, appeared inside the magazine. The past couple weeks we’ve been talking a lot about the world premiere of Your Highness (view the red carpet photos at USCB here), which stars Danny McBride, James Franco, Zooey Deschanel, and our favorite swan, Natalie Portman. The movie makes numerous references to and jokes about weed, even the film’s title is an ode to the after effects of the sticky icky.
