Pro Athlete Salaries in 1987 [Infographic]

Pro athletes make crazy amounts of money. Even the lowest of the low on an NFL roster (practice squad) make what the rest of us would consider an excellent salary (minimum of $4700/week, which adds up to $79,900 over the regular season). It wasn’t always this way though. Back in the 1980′s salaries were much more modest. Here is an inforgraphic from a 1987 issue of Fortune Magazine that shows just how much average salaries in the four major sports have increased over the years. When your done reading this check out How Much Money Do You Make Compared to the Athletes? and The 10 Best Sports Jobs for Non-Athletes.

It’s officially March 24th and in case Google’s themed banner on their homepage didn’t tip you off, today marks the 137th birthday of America’s most legendary and influential magicians of the early 20th century – Harry Houdini. But for all his contributions to stage magic and his immortal legacy, not many people know much about him beyond the fact that he was a master escape artist. Houdini was born Eric Weisz on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary to Jewish parents and was one of seven siblings. Early in his youth, his family traveled to America and settled in Appleton, Wisconsin before ultimately moving to New York. Learn more about Houdini after the jump!

Ladies and gentleman, I think it is safe to say that the internet has found it’s new Double Rainbow Guy for 2011. Meet the clearly overexcited “Did You Just See That?!” Tornado Guy and, as his name implies. his affinity for said natural weather phenomenon. While his footage of the Hempfield, Pennsylvania tornado that occurred yesterday isn’t anything spectacular, his overall reaction is nothing short of priceless. It’ll probably be another week or two until his popularity begins to grow on the internet, but who’s to say he won’t be offered spots in commercials like Double Rainbow Guy and Microsoft; weather stripping and tornado insurance companies should be knocking on his door – assuming it didn’t fly off it’s hinges in the storm. See the video for yourself!

5 Indie Video Games To Check Out On Xbox Live

Filed under Cool Stuff, Entertainment, Features, homepage, Lists, Video, Video Games
The Indie Games section on XBOX Live is similar to the Wild West, it’s home to the good, the bad and the downright weird. On a semi-regular basis, I’ll choose five indie games at random and give a short, but thorough review for each; remember, I’m not going to sort through all the games just to find five good ones. My selections are either new, popular, or ones which just happen to catch my eye. Every title has a free trial and, should you find something you really like, it costs next to nothing to purchase the full game. Check out our full review after the jump!

Two-time Oscar winner and five-time Oscar nominee Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday in Los Angeles of congestive heart failure at the age of 79. She was known for being beautiful, wicked, and courageous – gaining just as much attention for her personal life as her professional one. She got hitched 8 times, caused the collapse of a couple others, battled illnesses, substance abuse, and led the fight against AIDS. Her salary for the 1963 film “Cleopatra” was an unprecedented $1 million (which is like $300 billion today). Today, we remember her heyday with a photo gallery of rare photos you’ve probably never seen before.

Ellen Page Looks “Super” In Tights

Comic book fans everywhere are a bit wary, if not disgusted, with the film Super – being that it shares far too many similarities with the comic mini-series Kick-Ass and its film adaptation of the same name. Blatant plagiarism aside, this low-budget, indie film showcases an all-star cast including The Office’s Rainn Wilson, the always lovely Liv Tyler and, yes, even Kevin “Hollow Man” Bacon (who plays a drug dealer named “Jock” in the film). But they’re not the ones causing a buzz all over the internet – the blog Egotastic! recently scored a fantastic picture of actress Ellen Page in her guise as the superheroine “Boltie.” Read more and see the pic after the jump!

Here are some of television’s most notably strange and peculiar characters that we’ve grown up watching and continue to do so today.

22 Vanity License Plates That Scream “Pull Me Over!” [PHOTOS]

Last week, the AP reported drivers in Kazakhstan replaced their license plates with signs that read “I LOVE SEX”. The former Soviet nation and homeland of Borat has a fairly relaxed attitude when it comes to sex (i.e. – Borat making out with his sister) despite a youth group calling for a ban on Valentine’s Day. That trend isn’t new – vanity plates have always been pretty funny – whether intentionally or not – but sometimes their creativity can be a giant red flag for cops. We’ve pulled a photo gallery of examples to keep you out of the clink. Check ‘em out after the jump!
