Hey Disc Head: New On DVD and Blu Ray January 5th, 2010

January is a typical wasteland of DVD/Blu-Ray releases as most studios blow their wad in December, leaving mostly category re-issues this week like Cheaper by the Dozen 2, available for the first time on Blu-ray. Uh . . . great.

But there are a few releases this week worth noting, particularly the most finalist OF all the Final Destinations to date and a few good TV shows boxed seasons including:

Chuck: The Complete Second Season

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

If you haven’t gotten into Chuck stop reading this now and go buy this box set.   The third season gears up this month, so there’s no better time to jump on board with a weekend marathon of series 1 & 2.  Chuck is an action-comedy about tech nerd (Like me!) who receives a” Neo” like download of the world’s greatest spy secrets directly to the brain (unlike me : ( so sad, so very sad).  Hilarity ensues.

Nothing defines cult hit more than the Chuck series, on the brink of death the series was resuscitated after a fan led two-month “Save Chuck” campaign where fans stormed NBC with picthforks and torches (except the part about storming, pitchforks and torches)    The third season of Chuck  begins on Sunday, January 10, 2010 with a two hour premiere at 9/8c before moving to its permanent time slot of Mondays 8/7c.  So . . .you’re still here?!?!  Get going!

The Final Destination

Releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray

Watch as clueless young people, aware that Death is honing in on them after an apocalyptic vision from one of the main characters, die in disgustingly awesome ways as they proceed not to stay somewhere that’s, I dunno, safe. Though nothing is ever safe in these movies, so that point is probably moot (someone is killed by a pool drain in this movie. A pool drain.) Comes with both 2D and 3D versions of the movie if you like your movies ugly and difficult to see with the slightly added benefit of things kind of jumping out at the screen.

Dogtown and Z-Boys

Releasing on Blu-Ray/available now for DVD

Do you ever wonder who the hell thought of grabbing a piece of wood, slamming four wheels on it, and riding it down an empty swimming pool? Not since the invention of parkour has something required such balls to come up with, and the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys you get to see the origins of skateboarding with one group in California back in the 70s. These days it seems kinda weird to call skateboarding an extreme sport given the rise of Japanese florescent lightube fighting, but just youtubing “awesome skateboard accidents” clears that right up.

Go ahead and try to tell me that you’ve experienced anything more awesome in your life since Saturday mornings with The Superfriends . . .ok fine, excepting sex, drugs, awesome drunk girls, getting your car,  and payday . . .but forget those and you know I’m right!
