The 5 Reasons MMA KO’d Boxing

MMA-Lead

For decades, boxing reigned as king of the sparing sports. Crowds from around the world would cheer for their favorite heavy hitters, like Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Mike Tyson. But despite paving the way for the new generation of fighting sports, boxing has taken a real hit in fans and ratings to the new breed, mixed martial arts. Here’s why…

head-kick

5. No Headkicks

Jabs and hooks are all well and good but what is the fun in dancing around the ring if the worry of getting kicked in the ear isn’t there? Sure guys like Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis were heavy hitters, but would they be so confident in their uppercuts if they had to watch out for a Mirko Cro Cop head kick the entire fight?

submission

4. No Submissions

Floyd Mayweather can throw down with the best of them, but can he get out of a Matt Hughes rear naked choke or a BJ Penn kimura? It’s all fun and games in boxing because there’s no risk of having your arm pulled out of its socket by Demian Maia.

3. No Takedowns or Slams

Wladimir Klitschko can punch out anybody. But can he take a huge takedown or a body slam from Brock Lesnar? Let’s see how powerful those fists are when Brock is jamming his head into the octagon cage.

gloves

2. 8 Oz. Padded Gloves

Manny Pacquiao can throw jabs all he wants because the only risk is getting a padded fist in return. Try going up against a guy with 4 Oz. gloves and see if you don’t get your jaw dislocated by Anderson Silva like Forrest Griffin did.

TYSON

1. No More Stars

The Lennox Lewis-Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson era was really boxing’s last gasp for air. Today, there are seldom any household names to be found in boxing whereas the UFC is full of guys like Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar, Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre, etc.

At this point, boxing is just hanging on as the soccer to the UFC’s football – and the only reason to watch the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight is if it is against B.J. Penn.

You cannot be serious… This sport’s gonna need a decade at least before those MMA names you mention become household names like Tyson et. al. Has anyone over 30 ever heard of most if not all of those names? Hell no. That’s assuming of course, the sport’s younger fans keep up with it as they age. It’s going to need a much wider demographic to be on par with boxing. Only time will tell.

  • JJ says:

MMA is cool and evrything but I prefer boxing. It doesn’t matter to me if MMA is right now more popular. Boxing has been around for 100 years and have a lot of hardcore fans so the sport will always here. Nothing like a great boxing match and I will always be a huge boxing fan.

  • The Devil says:

    This list is f*cked up.

The ONLY reason boxing is less popular than MMA, is because they ruined boxing by only putting it on HBO/Showtime & Pay-per-view. MMA is all over the place.

Also, those things you named are the things that make MMA unwatchable to me. I don’t want to watch to guys rolling around on the ground. That’s why I don’t watch “real” wrestling.

I might like MMA, if they took all the “wrestling” shit out of it. Hell, that’s why “fake” wrestling is so popular. It’s a completely different sport than “real” wrestling.

If they start suplexing people and stop all the rolling around, I might watch, but other than that, f*ck MMA.

  • Dadaboi says:

who are you kidding? Pacquiao will surely beat your ass up.

  • Alexander says:

    I disagree,
all the submissions, chockes, tackles and the fact that it’s an almost a bear knuckle fight contributed to the MMA’s takeoff but the main reason I believe is the success of the UFC. And the UFC owns it’s success to purely genius marketing by one man:Dana White.
    http://www.blitzcorner.com/MMA/Dana-White-Declares-War-on-Showtime

That’s the real reason I believe.

  • The Devil says:

I agree with Alexander. Dana White is a fuckin’ marketing genius. He’s like the Vince McMahon of MMA. Boxing’s still stuck in the old mafia style tactics of Don King and Bob Arum. They’re still in the ’70s.

  • Jeffers says:

Err soccer to football, soccer as you say on that side of the Atlantic is the most popular sport in the world bar none and always will be and always has been, FACT!! And its called FOOTBALL not soccer.

I agree with Al until my Dad tells me something about a MMA fighter it is still going to take some time before the likes of the UFC surpass boxing.

  • Johnny 5 says:

why is it that every MMA fan I have ever met has been a fucking tool bag. I see these fags at the bars with the Tapout shirts.. “hey bro! I took a hour gracie class. I think I can knock out Cro Cop” boxing schools the fuck out of mma.. for some reason everytime people talk about UFC PPV, the fans are always disappointed. the fight was boring.. they were just doing gay sex on the ground…

    FUCK MMA!

  • Barry Washington says:

You want to know the real reason why MMA is doing better than boxing?

The real reason is because for the past decade there has been a shitty heavyweight division. That is the real reason. Sure MMA is cool but a classic MMA fight cannot compete with a classic Boxing match.

  • crossNess says:

8 oz. still hurt like a bitch.

    source:

    experience! lol.

  • wes says:

word not having any legit (US) heavyweights is killing boxing. all the best fighters are welterweights. mayweather & pacman are more well known to the general public than gsp & anderson silva (that dude is the ultimate)

  • Aimee louise says:

    Garbage article.

Anderson Silva can barely do any damage with boxing gloves, which gives you an idea what the punchers in boxing would do with mma gloves.

  • cory says:

boxing is a quarter of the sport MMA is.. literally…

  • TijuanaBoxing says:

First of all MMA and Boxing are 2 different sports, I’m tire of people comparing them and trying to say MMA is the best or boxing is better.

Second your list is just funny, you mention boxing is like soccer where UFC is like “American” Football, I’m not sure if you actually have taking your head out of America and look around, soccer is the #1 sport in the world, just because is not in the states it doesn’t mean is no good, Anyone who knows how to kick and punch can go into MMA just like Tank among others did, hell even Kimbo is making a circus out if MMA, not to mention Lesnar, put Lesnar in a boxing match and see if he will be able to do what he is doing to the smaller more talented MMA fighters, I don’t think so.

Don’t try to sound knowledgeable by comparing sports you obviously know nothing about. Go visit other countries, look around and see what people think about boxing, soccer, mma and football, then maybe you’ll get an idea of how to make MMA better and you’ll see that having the “America F*ck yeah! mentality doesn’t really help in a any way, it just makes you look stupid.

Oh and I forgot, your dear UFC is owned by 1 person, who pays nothing to his fighters, and well now with Lesnar you can actually compare it with the WWE, same kind of business plan.
I do give 100% credit and respect to the actual fighters, it’s not an easy sport and they work their a** off to make it, I just don’t believe in the dictatorship business aspect of it, if not go read about Andre Arlovski and ask your self why Fedor hasn’t made that trip, : )

  • gss says:

Dana White is lying about the PPV numbers of the UFC. Boxing is still far out-selling UFC in terms of PPV and Gate totals.

  • Jgg says:

R U FUCKING KIDDING! RANDY COUTURE a legend of MMA has a 16-10 record, name a legend in boxing that has lost almost 50% of their fights. Boxing matches often determine who the better fighter is, in MMA its so much easier to catch someone and get a knockout without having more skill, Love both, but boxing is the best by far if were talking about competition and not just hoping to see a knockout.

  • Liam says:

Boxing can still draw way higher if they put together the right event. Mayweather/Pacquiao will outdraw any UFC event next year. Also I’m puzzled by that boxing-soccer, UFC-football comment. Yes, boxing and soccer are more popular worldwide than UFC and gridiron but soccer’s popularity is rising in the US and gridiron remains a national institution.

  • James Ryan says:

Well that gives me something to think about!

  • Chri534 says:

It’s incredible to read this ignorance.

Not only are the majority of these comments based on nothing more than blinded resistance to change, but the article itself doesn’t appear to be fully educated about the sport of mma.

I’m not trying to take a dig at anyone (especially the authors). I’m just saying people should be more knowledgeable about the sport before forming an opinion and going on a rant about it.

(No offense igor…but Penn has never finished a fight via kimura, and I cannot think of a single time when he has had anyone in danger with one.)
