Forget about cell phones trying to be cameras. Instead, how about a camera that tries – and succeeds – at being a movie projector? Well, that’s exactly what Nikon is delivering with the new Coolpix S1000pj. Before we get into the projector part, let me first point out that this slick photo snapper includes a 5X wide angle zoom lens, 5-way VR image stabilizer and 12.1 megapixels.

It can also automate the camera setting, depending upon the scene you are shooting. Auto portrait mode keeps everyone from looking like the Addams family through such things as face-priority, skin softening and a blink warning. And it also shoots video.

So we can all agree that it has enough goodies to take a decent picture. But where other camera’s force you to check out your pictures on tiny LCD screen, the S1000pj has a built-in miniature LED projector that can display your snapshots and video on anything, up to 40 inches away.

The VGA quality is good enough for most people. I mean, c’mon, who’s going to complain about resolution when you’re whipping around an image on the car’s dashboard complete with music and visual effects? (Way more deadly than texting, btw.) And sure it works better in dim light, but if you want to go outdoors just stick it on the projector stand accessory and hunker down against an alley with a coat tossed over your head. Just don’t expect anyone walking by to understand.
