Men and Women Can Now Share Dorms At U. of Chicago

July 8, 2009 by COED Staff

INDEXCharlie Barlow plans to room with one of his best friends next semester at the University of Chicago: Lauren “Lulu” Danzig.

The two are among 50 students who will take advantage of a new policy allowing male and female undergraduates to room together — something that was forbidden throughout the 117-year history of the Hyde Park school.

For 19-year-olds Danzig and Barlow, it’s not a romantic thing: She already has a boyfriend on campus. She says she simply prefers to live with men, and Barlow is a very close friend.

Read all about the awesome new rules and what other school may implement.

    YEYE!!!!
Especially if the studetns request tobe roomed with one another. I see no problem with it. Living toggether after college is not forbidden. Working together is not forbidden and in most universities classes are not gender specific. IF you dont want to be around the opposite sex go to a unisex school. its 2009!!! Get Real.

I think it is a good and bad idea. Good because not every female or male can stand being around another female or male for the amount of time you have to when having a roommate. It’s a bad idea due to what could possibly happen in the dorms. Essentially it is up to the students to decide who they trust and how they conduct themselves.

@ Sarah: Well, they’ll all be at least 18 – adults and living away from home. Therefore they can do what they want to in their dorms. If they want to have sex, then there is nothing wrong with that.

If certain students have religious issues with premarital sex, they don’t have to do it. And if some people feel uncomfortable with rooming with a member of the opposite sex, they can request to be with a member of the same sex.

It sounds like a great idea to me.

I like it. Though the only thing that could be bad about it is if people were to go potluck and they end up with some crazy roommates (for both guys and girls). You can get some crazy people as roommates, may it be co-ed or not. :P

Wow – I wish this had been an option when I was a freshman. I’m a girl, but I grew up with all brothers – living with a guy could have avoided many a girl fight my freshman year :)
