US National Soccer Team Players Who Twitter

After beating Spain in the semi-finals of the 2009 Confederation’s Cup – one of the biggest upsets in recent soccer history – the United States is headed for the Finals against powerhouse team, Brazil (who whooped the US’s ass 0-3 earlier in the Cup). Twenty-four-year-old goalie, Brad Guzan was the first pick for Chivas USA in the 2005 MLS Superdraft, making him the highest pick for a goalie, ever. He won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2007, and represented the US at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Currently, Guzan plays professionally for the English Premier League, Aston Villa.

Freddy Adu

Born in Tema, Ghana, Freddy Adu emigrated to the United States at age eight, and became a US citizen in 2003. At age 14, Freddy became one of the youngest players ever to sign a professional contract, joining D.C. United in 2004. And that same year, he became the youngest player to play in a MLS game. His first season, Freddy racked up five goals with three assists. Freddy currently plays for S. L. Benfica in Portugal.

Sacha Kljestan

While playing at Seton Hall University, Sacha was named Big East Offensive Player of the Year, was first-team All-Big East in ’04 and ’05, and holds Seton Hall’s single-season assists record, raking in 15 in 2005. In 2006, he was a finalist for the MLS Rookie of the Year award. And in 2008, he represented the US at the Summer Olympics. Sacha currently plays for Chivas USA.

Jozy Altidore

As the 17th overall pick in the 2006 MLS Superdraft, Jozy joined the now-New York Red Bulls (previously known as the MetroStars). That year, the then 16-year-old became the youngest player to appear in a MLS playoff match, and helped the NY Red bulls bring in multiple wins that year. In 2008, Jozy transferred to Villarreal, signing a $10 million contract. This year, he’s on a single-season loan to Xerez. However, because of a toenail surgery, he’s yet to make an appearance for the team.

Charlie Davies

After three years at Boston College, Charlie Davies skipped out on the prospect of being a “very high” pick in the MLS Superdraft, deciding instead to head to Europe. In 2006, Davies signed his first professional contract, joining the Swedish Allsvenskan team, Hammarby IF. After a rough year in 2007, Davies came into his own in 2008, scoring 14 goals in 27 games. This year, his skills seem to be staying with him, having scored four goals for Hammarby in just nine games.

Landon Donovan

One of the heros of the United States’s winning Confederation’s Cup game against Spain, Landon Donovan signed with the German club, Bayer Leverkusen in 2001 to become the youngest American player to sign with a foreign team. (However, much of his contract time was spent on loan with the San Jose Earthquakes.) Donovan signed with LA Galaxy in ’05, helping the Galaxy to win the MLS Cup (one of three for Donovan). He currently plays on loan for the German team, Bayern Munich.
