art.concealed.gun-726864College students and faculty members with a concealed handgun license would be able to pack their firearms on campus under a bill that the Texas Senate tentatively approved on Tuesday.

The measure, passed on a 20-10 vote, was offered by a state senator who said he wants to give Texas students protection against mass shootings such as occurred at Virginia Tech University in 2007.

Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, said the right-to-carry measure also would protect students from other life-threatening situations.

I don't see how this legislation could be negative, even if it isn't necessarily positive.

The thing is, people who go to a college campus with the intent to hurt people aren't going to pay attention to gun licensing laws anyway.

The process for getting a concealed-carry license is rigorous and training intensive. In the event of a college shooting, someone with such a license already on campus is nearly as useful as having a police officer, and much faster too.

    It's Virginia Tech.
