Best of the Week: Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Here’s the sad truth: Seth Rogen is wearing very thin on us. His laugh, his stoner shtick, even his cleverness — all the things that we love about him, we’re getting tired of. Seth needs to take a year or two off. Do a supporting role here and there, maybe a stint on Broadway, some Shakespeare in the Catskills for a summer… we just don’t want to see him star in anything. For a while. All that having been said, this movie is pretty awesome. Kevin Smith writes and directs, and his dialogue coming out of Rogen’s mouth is at times priceless. Epic, even. The plot is 100% worthless, but that’s not really the point. Kevin Smith is completely on top of his screenwriting game in this one, and as anyone who has followed his work through the years knows, that’s something you don’t want so miss.

Worst of the Week: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist
When any thinking person sees the word ‘playlist’ in the title of a film, the instinct to hate the sh*t out of that film immediately kicks in. Playlist? It’s just such a transparent ploy to appeal to anyone who owns an iPod and loves indie rock and, you know, wears sweaters and whatever. So needless to say, even before we pressed play on this one we hated it. And just as we expected, it wasn’t great… but it wasn’t horrible either. Unlike Seth Rogen, we are nowhere close to tired of Michael Cera’s shtick. The awkward timing, the fey unmanliness, the amazing body language — it’s never been done like he does it, and even in a crappy movie like this it’s comedic gold.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Unless you’re a dad or a mom you shouldn’t be coming anywhere close to this one. If, however, you are one or both of those things, good news, your kids will love it and you’ll maybe laugh a bit too. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Ross from Friends and Will Smith’s wife all provide voices, and exactly half of those people are really funny. So… not bad, not good, and we liked it better the first time when it was called The Lion King.
