Quantum of Solace, the latest film in the James Bond series staring Daniel Craig and the stunningly sexy Olga Kurylenko, drops in American theaters this Friday. Before everyone straps in for the newest 007 flick lets go back and rank the previous 21 films. Bond films are known worldwide for their action, villains, gadgets, and of course: the sexy Bond girls!

21. The Living Daylights: This was the last of the Flemming novel’s to be made into a film and it was also the debut of Timothy Dalton. The film was lacking in almost all elements of a James Bond film. Dalton’s performance as Bond was lackluster at best and this film represented that.

20. View to a Kill: Bond heads to Silicon Valley to do battle against – Christopher Walken. The storyline was weak and Walken bordered on uncomfortably creepy.

19. License to Kill: The final Dalton film focused on the South American drug trade. Bond tracks down a coke dealer who deals a fatal blow to his Felix Lighter’s new wife. One positive was the performance by a virtual unknown at the time – Benicio Del Torro. Oh and Wayne Newton plays a TV evangelical.

18. Die Another Day: The last Brosnan film went a little too over the top. DNA transplants, invisible cars, and a laser that uses the power of the sun to take out the border of North and South Korea. But Halle Berry in that orange bikini is incredible!

17. For Your Eyes Only: Bond fights evil in the Greek Isles and finds himself the object of desire of a sex crazed figure skater.

16. Octopussy: While this may be the best title of all of the Bond films it was severely lacking in a quality storyline. Maud Adams returns as the Bond girl for a second time but even that isn’t enough to save this movie.

15. Diamonds are Forever: Connery returned to the series that he started after Lazenby’s OHMSS. The movie tracks SPECTRE to Las Vegas in an effort to stop a bomb from destroying Washington D.C.

14. The World is Not Enough: Sorry but Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist – not buying that for a second.

13. Moonraker: The James Bond version of Star Wars where Bond travels to an outer space city fighting the bad guys with laser guns. Too bad they couldn’t score a cameo by Luke Skywalker.

12. Tomorrow Never Dies: Bond goes up against an out-of-control media baron who uses the news to stage a war between England and China. The movie features some awesome gadgets and one of the more creative car chase scenes.

11. The Man with the Golden Gun: Bond fights an assassin who only needs one shot to kill his victims.

9. Thunderball: SPECTRE steals a pair of nuclear missiles which is uses to hold the world ransom for a large sum of money. The best part of this movie is the underwater fight sequence at the very end of the film.

5. Dr. No: Sean Connery starred as English spy James Bond for the first time in Dr. No. The movie was filmed on a relatively low budget but gained great success worldwide. The movie also features one of the most famous shots in film history: Honey Ryder emerging from the Caribbean Sea in her white bikini with a knife buckled around her waist.

4. Casino Royale: The latest Bond film was a re-boot for the franchise. Daniel Craig took over the reins of the most famous spy by filming the only Ian Flemming book yet to be made by Eon Productions. The film was supposed to show Bond before he was “James Bond.” It also is supposed to provide a more accurate representation of the original Flemming character.

3. From Russia with Love: Bond travels to Istanbul to take out SPECTRE. Bond gets involved with a Russian cipher clerk. The briefcase that saves Bond life is our first introduction to Q. This movie is often overlooked but it is definitely one of the better Bond films.

2. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service: I know that this is going to be the most disagreed ranking but hear me out. Lazenby had some really tough shoes to fill and while he wasn’t the dream Bond he did a pretty good job. The fight sequences are really good and Telly Savalas as Blowfeld was a perfect match. Dianna Rigg marries 007 and then dies shortly thereafter. This film is so good because it is so different.

1. Goldfinger: Hands down the best Bond film of all time. This movie has it all: beautiful women, an incredible car chase scene, Bond playing golf, an awesome bad guy, and the greatest character name ever: Pussy Galore. From the gadgets to the Aston Martin this is the ultimate of all the Bond films.

Wonderful selection. However, I still think that Shirley Eaton in Goldfinger was the greatest. She had relatively little screen time but made a great impression. The other was Claudine Auger as Domino in Thunderball.

A good selection, although I would have swapped Diana Rigg and Honor Blackman around. The irony here is that Diana Rigg replaced Honor Blackman in “The Avengers.” I would have put Ursula Andress ahead of Eva Green and Daniella Biachi too.
But props for putting the underrated Bianchi so high. I think “From Russia With Love” is the best Bond film, precisely because it lacks the gadgets, ridiculous character names, dumb jokes, outrageous plots, and other things associated with Bond movies. It’s a straight action film with the best action hero ever.

This is a pretty terrible list. “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “The World is Not Enough” are sad excuses for films.
