Why They Yankees Are the Red Sox’s B*tches

Since the end of 2003, the Red Sox have won two World Series championships, while the Yankees haven’t even made a return trip. We all know about the 2004 Red Sox and their triumph over the Yanks, coming back in the ALCS after being down three-games to one. However, what is interesting to look at how things have changed since 2003 as a direct result of how the Red Sox talent evaluators have fared much better head to head against the once-mighty Yanks.

Let’s take a closer look.

The 2001 Diamondbacks had two ace pitchers that they used to edge out the Dynasty Yanks in the Series, and both of those pitchers eventually made their way to the AL East. The Red Sox dealt for Curt Schilling, who proved masterful in his time in Boston, especially the postseason – while the Yanks later traded their way into acquiring Randy Johnson, who was a nightmare in October. Red Sox 1, Yankees 0.

Next case…

The 2003 Marlins defeated the Yanks in the World Series, and much of their success came from their then-young stable of young stud pitchers – Josh Beckett, A.J. Burnett, Brad Penny, and Carl Pavano. Both the Yanks and Sox wanted to grab one of those Florida arms and bid against each other once the first became a free agent. Unfortunately for the Yankees, they decided to threw piles of money at Carl Pavano, despite him obviously being the weakest link of the Big Four. The Red Sox then moved deftly to acquire Marlin staff ace Josh Beckett, along with throw-in (and eventual 2007 World Series MVP and former Yankee farmhand) Mike Lowell for two of their top prospects, Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez. Red Sox 2, Yankees 0.

Moving on…

After the World Baseball Classic put international arms on display for the world to see, the Yanks and Sox turned their sights to Japan. There, they bid against each other for the services of Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Red Sox won this auction and eventually landed the pitcher who finished 18-3 in his second season in the bigs this year. The Yanks panicked and paid $46M for Kei Igawa – a guy who is still in the minors and makes Jeff Karstens look like Sandy Koufax. Red Sox 3, Yankees 0.

Want more?

This past offseason saw the Minnesota Twins asking around for who wanted to deal for Johan Santana. While neither the Yanks nor the Sox ended up with Santana, let’s take a look at why neither pulled the trigger. From the Sox, the Twins wanted Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury. Lester evolved into a Game 1 playoff pitcher (who won against the only 100-win team, the Angels) and Ellsbury is the AL stolen base leader and clutch postseason performing CF for Boston. From the Yanks, the Twins wanted Melky Cabrera (hit .249 and finished last third of the season in the minors), Ian Kennedy (0-4, 8.17 ERA, finished season in minors), and Phil Hughes (0-4, 6.62 ERA, finished season basically in minors). Looks like the Red Sox made the right decision, while the Yanks made the wrong decision. Red Sox 4, Yankees 0.

And finally…

The Pittsburgh Pirates were holding a firesale at the deadline, with two main pieces they were willing to trade – Jason Bay and Xavier Nady. Yanks moved quickly and grabbed the X-Man, Xavier Nady along with Damaso Marte for four prospects. The Red Sox waited to the final hour and landed Jason Bay in a three-team deal that sent disgruntled Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles. Nady hit .268 with 12 HR and 40 RBI in 59 games in New York, while Bay hit .293 with 9 HR and 37 RBI in 49 games in Boston. While the jury is still out on this trade, just take a look at Game 1 of the Boston ALDS vs. Los Angeles. Bay hit the go ahead 2-run HR and became the eventual game-winning run scored. If the past is any indication as to how this one will turn out, we might be looking at 2009 AL MVP Jason Bay, while Nady is platooning in LF with the aging Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. Just a thought. Red Sox 5, Yankees 0.

Are you kidding me? The Red Sox are no where near the caliber of the Yankees. 26 to what 6? shut it already. Win some more and then maybe come back and talk.

"We all know about the 2004 Red Sox and their triumph over the Yanks, coming back in the ALCS after being down three-games to one."

Technically true, they did come back from a 3-1 deficit, but I think most people know the 2004 Red Sox for coming back in the ALCS after being down three games to _zero_.

red sox traded hanley ramirez, best short stop in the game. who is the red sox short stop? a couple old guys and a AAA player named jed lowrie. they have an awful defensive left side of the infield. Nady isnt platooning, whoever wrote this article is severely misinformed. Matsui wont play, hes a professional DH, meaning the yanks wont pick up abreus contract and nady will play right. Fact of the matter is the yanks finished a mere 6 games behind the sox, and will not be in the post season. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 14 SEASONS. and looks like josh beckett will be sitting his stupid ass on the bench for the postseason, plus he walks like a duck and has stupid facial hair.

  4. JODE says:

    Stupid Yankee's fans… They're so hurt.

  5. MF44 says:

"The Red Sox are no where near the caliber of the Yankees."

That's true. Boston ACTUALLY MAKES THE PLAYOFFS.

  6. john says:

There was never a curse.. the red sox just sucked.. enough said.

  7. METsoxFAN says:

Lets be real here jay… ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? You know why i cant stand the yankees??

well i'll tell you. its their fans (dilusional)

ALL yankees fans LIVE IN THE PAST. ALL i ever hear about is these 26 championships the yanks won…

you dont have Ruth, Berra, Gherig, Dimaggio or Mantle… 22 of the 26 championships were won prior to THE SEVENTIES… yanks haven't won in 8 YEARS, so what it all boils down to is this…

SPORTS IS ALL ABOUT RIGHT NOW.. not yesterday or last season because none of that matters anymore! look at teams like the chargers, or new england… um last season they were phenomenal, and now, well not so much.

So just do us all a favor and shut the fuck up already and accept that your team is a bunch of over paid bitches who look good on paper and fail to get anything accomplished.

  8. METsoxFAN says:

and go ahead talk shit about the mets… ive accepted that they suck years ago, but that dont make me any less of a fan.. also i dont go around like "hey we won the championship in 86 so our team is good" just to justify that my team is "good" fucking head cases…

  9. Michael says:

mets won the world series because bostons buckner made an error, they should have 1 world series title. boston wins because of bill james, the smartest baseball mind in the world, thats what the sox have going for them. other than that the yanks are poised to make another run at the world series as they have the past 14 seasons, though falling just short of the playoffs this year. bostons time will run out

  10. rob says:

Nobody cares about the Yankees/Sox rivalry anymore except ESPN and Red Sox fans who are not from Boston. The memo clearly didn't get to Michigan. This would have been a quaint article in 2004 — MAYBE as late as 2005 — but in 2008 it's about as interesting as a mullet joke. I don't know if you heard, but all your base are belong to us, too.

  11. Fenway Frank says:

When you come from a city that's basically ground zero for starting this debacle the country is in, and when you're fans of a team owned by a felon, what do you expect.

  12. YonkersYankees says:

Youre all delusional, yes the Red Sox have had a slight advantage ovr the yanks for the past 3-5 years but all the accomplishment the yankees have made against the sox over the years highly outweighs anything thats happened lately. Once the yanks win it again this crap will be out of sight and out of mind.
Not to mention that the rivalry between yanks and sox is so lame over the past season
