I think you're mistaken about the correct length of pants. About two years ago I discovered the value of buying unfinished pants and taking them to my local men's store to have them finished properly. (This actually had to do with two things (1) I'm a big fan of Bill's Khakis and the come unfinished and (2) I'm between sizes so having them finished is the best idea.) At any rate, pants like khakis or cords ought to stop just blow the TOP of a typical shoe, not at the sole. Those few inches make a considerable difference in look. Although, I might be a little more traditional than most of you since I choose pleats and cuffs.
