Why the United States Will Win the Ryder Cup
September 21, 2008 Posted in Sports

Every two years the best golfers from the United States and Europe compete in a three day competition for the coveted Ryder Cup. Before 1979 the United States absolutely dominated the competition but recently the Europeans have owned the cup. Since 1997 the Europeans have won the Ryder Cup four out of the last five matches. This year’s American team boasts six rookies to the squad making the United States an underdog for the first time. Here are a few reasons why the United States will prevail over the Europeans at Valhalla:
1. Home Field Advantage. The United States will compete on home turf for the first time since the disaster at Oakland Hills. The fans in Kentucky will not be like the cordial fans of Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Expect a loud and raucous crowd in Louisville this week to cheer on the Americans. And if you are attending the event this year – make sure that you let the Europeans know exactly where they are.
2. Paul Azinger. This year’s captain is more edgy. His competitive streak will be hard to overcome. Expect Captain Azinger to be tuned into his players in order to put together the best pairings possible.
3. Underdog Role. This is the first time the Americans will play the underdog role. The pressure is not on them to win the cup this year, but rather on Europe. This should make the American players more relaxed and more free to play their own game.
