Tuesdays are to music-lovers what Sundays are to Christians. It’s a day of rest. And by rest, I mean, blasting your new album in your iPod that just came out. There are multiple CDs, every single Tuesday of every single week, that are released to the public. Some of the CDs are long anticipated, some weren’t anticipated whatsoever, and some are just a straight up surprise.

Scars On Broadway’s self-titled album that was released today came as a total surprise to me. I didn’t get the memo that two System of A Down members had a new band. Once I got over feeling betrayed by my own ignorance, I gave the new band a listen. Comprised of SOAD’s very own Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan, the group is completed by Franky Perez, Danny Shamoun, and Dominic Cifareli. One would fairly expect the project to sound similar to SOAD and one would be very correct in expecting that.

The band’s first single, “They Say”, rings a bell with a familiar sound in the rock world. But while the band certainly has its SOAD moments, Scars On Broadway is clearly its own thing. Without crazy screaming and erratic guitar riffs, Scars On Broadway is bound to win over some who were never SOAD fans to begin with. The project, as a whole, is less abrasive than SOAD-which could wind up being a very good thing for these guys. The lyrics, however, are still relatively in your face and bound to piss off conservative listeners.

With support of Interscope Records, Scars On Broadway are on their way to becoming a sure hit. They kick off a European tour in Paris next month and will hopefully be touring the states after that. And if you still don’t have enough reasons to check out this new band, consider the following: The band’s acronym is SOB.
