E3 Recap: The End

July 23, 2008     Posted in Entertainment

The expo is finally over. All the producers and designers can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to making games instead of pimping them. All in all I felt, as an outside observer, that the show left me slightly wanting. There was no groundbreaking news, no giant promises, and no real blockbuster game announced that we didn’t already know about.

The Nintendo Talk

Nintendo is about making cash. Which isn’t a bad thing. Unless you’re a serious hardcore Nintendo gamer fan boy who wishes they’d remake Zombie’s At My Neighbors for the Wii.I wouldn’t say they are done with hardcore games altogether, but the order of the day is definitely casual stuff, and their talk certainly said that. They did introduce some new hardware for the Wiimote that promised more accurate movement…and then used it to throw a Frisbee to a dog in Wii Sports 2.

Best New Thing

I’d have to say the best thing in the show was the walk through and footage of the highly anticipated Fallout 3, which will be released on the PS3 and the XBOX 360. It was a tall order, redefining a beloved series like that, and there was a legion of semi-deadly, seriously frustrated nerds waiting to kill anyone who would f**k with their favorite game formula. Not only did that find that old flavor, they added new shit that I’m pretty confident everyone is excited about.

Worst New Thing

I would say the obvious 50-Cent sequel, Blood On the Sand, but then this was announced: All-Star Cheer Squad, a game based on how well you can lead your own squad of cheerleaders to victory. I recommend the trailer because there is some ridiculous footage of people dancing in motion capture suits.

Most Hilarious Trailer

The Duke Nukem’ Trilogy trailer, by far. In an effort to mock the very concept of trailers (and themselves), the guys who make Duke Nukem promised an ‘explosive’ trailer for their new series of games on portable platforms features everyone’s favorite alien killing chauvinist. What did they deliver? It’s hard to describe but I’d recommend you just check it out.
