The political world has its panties in a bunch this morning over the cover illustration of this week’s (July 21st) cover of the New Yorker. This illustration by Barry Blitt, called “The Politics of Fear,” combines every smear tactic so far used against presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.
The Obama campaign has already called it “tasteless and offensive,” reports the Huffington Post. And nobody else really knows what to think of it.
Is it ok because it’s the New Yorker? Should we freak out about this like we freak out about everything else, or try to explain it, so we seem more sophisticated? This seems to be the internal battle of the media, but screw them. How do you feel about it?
The New Yorker cover: social satire or a vicious political hit?

If it was McCain or any other republican on the cover no one would utter a sound. Obama and mostly his wife are getting what is known as come-uppance.
I loved the cover photo of Hussein and Michelle. It’s about time someone other than conservative Talk Radio is speaking the truth about this lying/Socialist/Coward candidate for POTUS. If Hussein is embarassed that Americans aren’t more multilingual, imagine how embarrassed we feel that he’s the Democrats candidate for President. It’s comparable to Al Gore receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for ???
In my haste to post my previous blog, I failed to credit the many fine conservative journalists on websites and publications who daily attempt to lead us objectively through this maze that is the political theatre this year. Thankyou one and all, and Thankyou New Yorker.
It’s satire. This country has lost a remarkable amount of its ability to detect and enjoy satire. This pic and an obvious mockery of many of the most extreme ‘reservations’ some people (Clinton’s people included) had about Obama.
I don’t support Obama (what has he done in public service? Please name 1 bill he authored or co-sponsored, whithout checking Wikipedia, that you stand firmly behind and support. Also tell me if you think it’s ‘cool’ to vote ‘present’ aka ‘I don’t care’ on 75%+ of your votes like Barry has), but I didn’t take this as a political takedown move. I took it as a satirical look at the grousings of SOME idiots who don’t support him.
What up, satire? Obama has been completely untouched by the scathing media until now. It’s about damn time. Plus, the New Yorker is one of the most liberal publications around. How could it be anything BUT satire? And it’s pretty ignorant to actually believe what they put on the cover – they’re just making fun of the people who have these problems with him. I hate him because he’s the most liberal Senator currently sitting and he spouts off about “hope” and “change” without providing any actual plans. He’s ignorant.
