Prepare for your mind to be blown: Scientist predict that there will be no ice at the North Pole this summer, the most dramatic evidence of global warming to date. Though the thaw is not yet complete, predictions set the odds at greater than 50:50 for a full meltdown.
Disappearance of the arctic ice will allow, for the first time in modern days, countries near the pole access to the predicted natural resources uncovered by the melting. Though the environmental impacts are more symbolic than consequential, politically and economically, the consequences are substantial.
From the Independent:
“From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water,” said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.
If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.
…
“The issue is that, for the first time that I am aware of, the North Pole is covered with extensive first-year ice – ice that formed last autumn and winter. I’d say it’s even-odds whether the North Pole melts out,” said Dr Serreze.
Each summer the sea ice melts before reforming again during the long Arctic winter but the loss of sea ice last year was so extensive that much of the Arctic Ocean became open water, with the water-ice boundary coming just 700 miles away from the North Pole.
This meant that about 70 per cent of the sea ice present this spring was single-year ice formed over last winter. Scientists predict that at least 70 per cent of this single-year ice – and perhaps all of it – will melt completely this summer, Dr Serreze said.
I’m not sure if anyone still doesn’t believe in global warming. But something tells me they’re everywhere. And if ice melting isn’t evidence enough to convince you that, at least, the earth is getting warmer, you are either psychopathic-ly stubborn, or an idiot. I’m sure the most heated debate is whether or not humans are to blame. But we’re to blame for everything else, so why not this?
And what? Like we’re going to expect the cows to fix this…Guess I better stock up on tote-bags and reusable water bottles before lower Manhattan becomes part of the East River.

The earth has warmed over the last 100 years or so. However, the anthropogenic causes of it have been overexaggerated by alarmists as climatology is a science in its infancy and has undergone more than a few growing pains that seem to be conveniently unreported on.
Ask youself, how has the earth gone through 3 ice ages and had periods where the climate was on average well above where we are right now (a few of those without human interference)? Did dinosaurs drive SUV’s?
There are far greater forces that effect climate than just man.
Google around and find articles on the current sunspot cycle (or the lack thereof) Temperatures dropped precipitously this year. One year does not a trend make, but the lack of solar activity and the temp drop can’t be ignored totally. If solar trends continue, it will be interesting to see what happens the next couple of years. I’ve read some astrophysicists who have said we may be on the edge of a mini-ice age. They just had an emergency conference with 100 of them not too long ago.
If they did drive SUV’s did they turn to ethanol for a fuel source?
The importance, for me i guess, is reducing reliance on oil. Yeahyeah, save they whales, ice and the manatee, but I just dont want to pay $5 a gallon to drive.
Heads up. Volcanoes spew more crap than all of the debris humans have produced since we started walking upright. The north pole may be getting smaller (its not) but the converstation isnt finished because….hold on ….wait for it….wait for it…yeah the SOUTH POLE IS GETTING BIGGER, DEEPER AND COLDER. Al Gore is a liar his mentor Paul Ehrlich predicted in 60’s that mass starvation would reduce the US population to 22.6 million by 1999. Your being lied to by tyrants that want to control your life.
Maybe we can just say that Santa moved to the South Pole because of sub-prime woes! Good work J – problem solved, but I still dont want to pay so much for gas and there is no reason for it to hit 100 degrees in NYC – damn you non-global-warming/south pole ice-over!
excellant delivery
Wow I didn’t think there was still anyone around who thinks humans aren’t heavily contributing to climate change. But I guess if you get all your opinions from Ron Paul some level of ignorance is to be expected.
