Ok, here’s the deal. Ever since putting together COED Presents: The 50 Sexiest WAGs of World Soccer, we’ve been getting really into soccer, trying to figure it all out. The first thing you need to learn is that this game is known globally as ‘Football’, you guys in the USA are one of only two countries that call it soccer.
Secondly, the competition you are referring to as “The 2008 EuroCup” is not known by that name. It is simply know as “Euro 2008″.

Finally!
It was just a question of time till you people realized what a great sport really is. I’m from Brazil, and it’s a maaaaaajor thing here…
If you guys are really into learning everything there is to learn about soccer, wikipedia is a great source of information for the great european soccer clubs…
And feel free to add me on msn, vinicius_azm@hotmail.com, if you ever need someone to discuss soccer with!
Mike: wrong. The US, Canada, Autralia, New Zealand, a number of Caribbean nations, Belize and actually most of the English-first speaking world actually calls is ’soccer’ which is a term invented by the ENGLISH.
Aside from that, it’s incredibly douchebaggy to make that kind of comment. (oh and did I mention that Italy doesn’t call it ‘football’ or the Italian equivalent? well they don’t either)
To the author: welcome to the fold. It’s a magnificent game. You should definitely make it out to some world cup qualifiers.
I would tell you to support Red Bull New York, but they suck and have horrible fans, but once they are in their new stadium they might turn it around. You should go once that opens. Unless you live closer to Philly then go support them once they start up since they already have a ton of fans.
It’s the greatest sport to watch live. I got goosebumps seeing the giant US flag being stretched over the crowd. That is always one of my favorite moments when the giant banners come out.
papa bear,
that’s cause most of the English speaking word sucks at football.
And if by ‘invented by the ENGLISH’ you meant people from England, it is highly unusual for people in the UK to refer to the sport as soccer. They use ‘football’ as well…
In Italy they use Calcio, which means ‘kick’. Which is not that differente from ‘futebol’ or ‘football’, since they all make a clear reference to foot.
Oh, and btw, I agree with you, kind of a douchebaggy comment.
Vinicius:
I agree with you that the English speaking world is inferior at soccer/football. Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina are the best by far.
Calcio actually means ‘Kick it’ the fact remains it doesn’t translate to ‘football’ It refers to the foot but still it’s not a direct translation and it’s for the same reasons the US didn’t end up adopting the ‘football’ colloquialism (since that’s all it is since the game is REALLY called ‘association football’ to differentiate it from Rugby Football)
I was referring to people from England. I know the de facto term they use is Football but they have shows called ’soccer am’ and they call hooligans ’soccer hooligans’ it’s just an abbreviation for ‘association’ part of ‘ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL’ However, they do use it far more than most people let on.
I hate even discussing this again, but I just hate that stupid shit. I mean, rather than talk about the game we love, you get some assanine Brit who wants to talk semantics. It’s so counterproductive and it’s no wonder so many people in the US and Canda get turned off from the game with having to deal with moronic crap like that.
papa bear, I have always wanted to know what soccer meant (the abreviation for association…), thanks!
Anyway, nice to see that the CO-ED guys are really getting into the sport… Good luck against Barbados! Yeah, like anyone would need luck for that LOL
