Despite 5 Million Fan Votes, NY Mets Veto “Rick Roll”

In a shameful move the New York Mets have decided to opt against playing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the clear winner in their online fan vote to determine what song would replace Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as the new eighth-inning sing-along tune.

The Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up” received over 5 million fan votes from sites like Digg.com and won by an overwhelming margin but as NY Daily News reporter Adam Rubin says The Mets didn’t care about our vote.

“Rather than commit to that as the new eighth-inning song since it probably doesn’t reflect the fan base’s wishes, the Mets will play the top six selections once apiece during the first six games of their home stand. The one that draws the largest crowd response will stick.

The other songs that made the cut, in descending vote order: “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Bon Jovi; “I’m a Believer,” the Monkees; “Movin’ Out,” Billy Joel; “Sweet Caroline,” Neil Diamond; and “Build Me Up Buttercup,” the Foundations.” [NY Daily News]

It takes only minutes to do and if enough people follow though maybe The Mets will choose to be fair and include Rick Astley in the applause vote.

I don’t care they choose what song.

The contest never stipulated that the online vote would definitely be the choice. They worded it to say the internet vote would “help decide.”

SOME weren’t Mets fans? Um, I’m pretty sure 99% of the voters in the online poll weren’t Mets fans. Hell, 75% of them probably weren’t even baseball fans. Because really, who actually gives a crap about stuff like this, unless it’s funny? No one.

The Mets let me down. That’s something Rick Astley would never do.

I’ve jumped many a campfire while rockin’ out to Mr Astley. Why can’t the Mets just accept what the fans want?

It was a good prank but how many of those fans were actually Mets fans??? Give me a break…

I thought the Mets came up with a nice compromise to determine the new 8th inning song:

So, FARK and DIGG rallied their troops, and got 5 million people to vote for Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up in the team’s eighth-inning sing-a-long contest.

Instead of declaring Astley the winner, the team will hold a live, run-off vote.

Tomorrow, during the eighth inning, they’ll play Never Gonna Give You Up, followed by Living on a Prayer on Wednesday, I’m a Believer on Thursday, Movin’ Out on Friday, Sweet Caroline on Saturday and Build Me Up Buttercup on Sunday.

…i actually like this solution…instead of just ignoring the FARK.com results, which are very real, Rick Astley and their efforts are recognized…however, as it was explained to me by the team, knowing full well that only a small, small percentage of those 5 million votes came from actual Mets fans, by playing the top six songs at Shea, the team can now gauge how their own, real fan base takes to each tune based on audience participation, which will ultimately determine the stadium’s new sing-a-long song…

…the funniest part about this entire thing is that, i never, in a million years, thought i would dedicate this much time and space to Rick Astley on MetsBlog.com…and i laugh every time i write his name…well played, FARK…well played, indeed…this may be one of the biggest Rickrolls ever…
