Malt liquor is evil. I live in Baltimore, Maryland I can definitely attest to that. I have seen so many people get into fights after drinking a couple 40's. When you drink 40's, you're not in a good frame of mind to begin with. You are broke as a joke and you don't have a job. You just scraped up enough change from the seat of your couch to buy a 40. Mixing that frustration with St. Ide's or Steel Reserve is a deadly mix. Malt Liquor will give you the heart to kill somebody. Shit happens when you're drinking outside all day with a bunch of crazy motherfuckers just as drunk, broke and angry as you are.

Not only that, but drinking 40's is a terrible addiction. When you are constantly broke and unemployed, every time you have two dollars and 75 cents in your pocket, you're gonna buy a 40. Before you know it, you are a wino that is ass drunk on daily basis.

Malt liquor is sold and bought in primarily poor areas because it is cheap drunk. If you're poor and you want to get drunk, you're not going to buy Modelo Especial 6 packs when a 24 pack of Magnum or Colt 45 is half the price. It's about perceived value and what the customer is willing to pay for and what they want for the price.

I hope the next study is how high Natural Light, Beast, and yes even malt liquor sales are high in college towns.... Surprise surprise.

"It may be that the availability influences consumption of these products which in turn influences homicide rates."

This is total bullshit. Correlation does not imply causation, and if single-malt scotch was as readily available, we'd be hearing about that instead of 40s.
