NCAA Basketball Picks Of The Day – Feb. 13, 2008

Basketball picks

Yesterday was a 2-3 day for our cappers as DA Zeus and Gebsta picked up wins and Fenboy fell to the bottom of the leaderboard with his second loss in a row.

Just when it looked as if Kentucky was turning its season around, the Wildcats were handed their most lopsided Southeastern Conference loss ever. DA Zeus’ (2-1) pick of Vandy -3.5 came in big time as Kentucky got romped by the Commodores by 41.

K-Lo (0-1) had a rough night as his Seton Hall Pirates came out flat. Marquette took command early on, going on a 15-0 run in the first half to take a 21-4 lead and never looked back. The Pirates lost by 25 points, unable to hang in and cover K-Lo’s +4 point spread.

For Bone (1-2) the Tar Heels got all they could handle from the Cavaliers, who had lost nine of 10 but played nothing like a team in a hopeless free fall. UNC squeaked out a 1 point win over the Cavs but were unable to cover the -8 point spread.

Gebsta (1-1), was correct is stating that the Seton Hall Pirates have thrown in the towel for the 2007-2008 season. His player to watch, Seton Hall’s Jamar Nutter, was ejected from the game at the start of the 2nd half securing an easy spread covering win for Gebsta.

As for Fenboy (0-2), a 10-point run by DePaul late in the first half was not enough as he missed covering the spread by 4. This game was Fenboy’s second loss in a row and he now sits at the bottom of the ranking.

Check out today’s picks and the leader board after the jump!

DA Zeus (2-1) from Fairfield University
The Pick: Houston +16 vs Memphis

In Memphis’s past three games they have been 20+ favorites with the point spread. Over the past 11 meetings Memphis has only beaten Houston once by more than 16 points. Houston quietly comes into the game 7-1 in Conference USA, and yes in second place right behind the Memphis Tigers.

Here is some food for thought: Houston playing in such a weak conference is still looking for a bid to the tournament. They may not get one without a big upset victory. This will probably be their last shot at knocking one off and in turn securing a bid into the NCAA tournament. As for Memphis, they are so talented that they just half to show up some nights, however just showing up will not cut it against this talented Houston Cougar squad. Memphis has played three crappy teams in a row and sometimes that can cause major issues the next time you play a talented opponent. In conclusion, I believe Houston covers this spread, and we just might see Memphis tonight get their first loss of the season straight up.

Notes: On a scale of 1 -10 how hot is this University of Houston girl?

Gebsta (1-1) from Seton Hall University
The Pick: Syracuse -4.5 vs South Florida

South Florida has lost 10 in a row, 7 of these games being at home. Syracuse has been hot in their last 4 game nailing down 2 crucial road wins at Villanova and DePaul and losing a close game to UCONN at home last week. What ever the case Syracuse is a better team and I feel giving South Florida 4.5 points I just not enough.

Stud of the Game: South Florida’s Dominique Jones (send him a Facebook Mesage or Poke) is the key to the game. In their last match-up the 6′4” guard had 23 points (8 points over his season average). An average to below average game on his part will allow Syracuse to cover the -4.5 spread anything over 15 points on his part could give South Florida the edge.

K-Lo (0-1) from Seton Hall University
The Pick: UCONN -5 vs Notre Dame

This is a dangerous pick with the way Notre Dame is playing but UCONN has the big bodies to match up for Harangody and should be more athletic then the Irish. ND has only played three games away from South Bend with two of them being huge losses. I’ll give the 5 pts and hope for another blowout.

Stud to Watch: Jeff Adrien (send him a Facebook Mesage or Poke), leading scorer and rebounded for UCONN who should be able to contain Harangody.

Bone (1-2) from from Lynchburg College
The Pick: San Diego St. +1.5 vs New Mexico

In their last match up San Diego St. beat New Mexico by 5 points and although New Mexico has won their last 2 games in commanding fashion San Diego has the defensive skills to shut down New Mexico’s 6′5” guard J.R. Giddens.

Stud of the Game: New Mexico’s 6′5” guard J.R. Giddens (send him a Facebook Mesage or Poke) dropped 36 points last game so if San Diego looks sto have any shot in pulling this game out they need to shut him down.

Notes: J.R. Giddens seems pretty hood in his Facebook photo.

Fenboy (0-2) from Marist College
The Pick: Ohio vs Toledo OVER 119

Simply put, 8 of Ohio’s last 10 games have gone under and I don’t see this one falling into that category. The last 3 times these teams have matched up they have gone over and I have no reason to think that this wouldn’t be a 71-66 game. Each team obviously knows how to score on one another and I don’t see Leon Williams scoring less than 25 against this so called “vaunted Toledo defense”

Stud of the Game: Leon Williams of Ohio who scored 26 last game and pulled down 15 boards. Obviously it’s going to be tough for him to match that total in rebounds when these teams don’t miss shots tonight, but look for him to match his point total of last game.

Notes: University of Ohio is the #2 party school in the nation. Leon Williams has a great high school football highlight reel, is that the same Leon Williams – he seems kinda… fat?

Besides the local news weatherman, the TV game show announcer is hands down the most annoying of all television personalities. Luckily for us, we have the ability to change the channel or hit the mute button on the remote. But as you will see in this clip, Rich Fields’ family is not so fortunate.
